Hi, Everyone,

I’ve been following the discussion about family engagement but after looking at Maryland’s wonderful toolkit, didn’t want to share what I’ve been doing with our state’s Department of Education on the same topic since Maryland’s is so wonderful! But, in NJ, we also created brochures for families on the topic.
Here are the links:
All documents are available here: http://www.state.nj.us/education/ece/njcyc/committees/family/resources/

The large document can be found here: http://www.state.nj.us/education/ece/njcyc/committees/family/resources/FamilyEngagement.pdf

4 Brochures:
· Before your baby is born: http://www.state.nj.us/education/ece/njcyc/committees/family/resources/HelpingChildBeHealthyBeforeBorn.pdf
· Infant/Toddler:

· Preschool:

Looking forward to talking with everyone at the next webinar. I’m resending the meeting details too, because I often have to scroll through lots to find it and at least by having it listed, I won’t have to go
back as far!

Good morning,

The Maryland State Library is working closely with our Early Childhood Division of the Maryland State Department of MSDE in support of their Family Engagement Framework and recently released Toolkit that supports their Framework. The Toolkit, in addition to being available electronically, has also been printed in hard copy, and distributed to major early childhood providers around the state. Children's Departments of public libraries were included in this distribution, and I am currently working with my YSC in all systems to implement use of these Toolkits with their staff, customers, and community partners. Here is the link to a page discussing the Framework, with a link to the Toolkit on the right side of the page and a downloadable version of the Framework at the bottom.

http://earlychildhood.marylandpublicschools.org/family-engagement-framework

As the YSC of the Mrayland State Library, I serve as a member of the state's Family Engagement Coalition, which just hosted its second very successful Family Engagement Summit last week. Maryland is one of the few states that has included a special section to their ESSA plan on Family Engagement.

I would love to hear what else is happening in other states about Family Engagement, and will plan to be on the call on August 31st.

Have a great Friday!

Carrie :)

We could devote the call to discussing Susan’s question about framework building at the state/large level and creating structure beyond what is provided in the PLA/GFRP Ideabook. Not to put you on the spot, Susan and Katie, but are you available on 8/31 from 1-2 Eastern/10-11 Pacific, and interested? I’ll read the Parents 2017 report before the call; if other attendees also have time to review that report and the Ideabook before 8/31, we could use those documents to frame our conversation.

Here is the link to download the Ideabook if you have not seen it:

Hi all,

I too have been thinking about family engagement based on the IDEA Book by Global Family and how to use it/provide a framework for libraries in Oregon to increase and improve family engagement. I'm not as far as Susan, but would greatly appreciate any ideas!

Multnomah County Library is doing week-long camps for teens most of this summer. For example, Literary Character Creation Camp<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmultcolib.org%2Fevents%2Fliterary-character-creation-camp-teens%2F75246&data=02%7C01%7Cjdwyer%40library.ohio.gov%7C7925db64c5824d8a27fa08d4e0133023%7C50f8fcc494d84f0784eb36ed57c7c8a2%7C0%7C0%7C636379820405552330&sdata=GNbR%2BmvqhJ3GuWvE3XRUTJ38splUEt08gMbqmRfQIus%3D&reserved=0> and Manga Short Animation Camp<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmultcolib.org%2Fevents%2Fmanga-short-animation-camp-teens%2F77432&data=02%7C01%7Cjdwyer%40library.ohio.gov%7C7925db64c5824d8a27fa08d4e0133023%7C50f8fcc494d84f0784eb36ed57c7c8a2%7C0%7C0%7C636379820405552330&sdata=0OiL%2FujG3JI4Sd25qq9iOvUr1gbxItrSYqIbp4dR94M%3D&reserved=0> are taking place this week. You might contact their head of teen services Sara Ryan (sryan at multcolib.org<mailto:sryan at multcolib.org>) and the summer reading coordinator Seana Lane (seanal at multcolib.org<mailto:seanal at multcolib.org>) to learn more.

Good afternoon,

I have been trying to develop a framework for family engagement based on the IDEA Book by Global Family Research and PLA and have not gotten far as other things keep popping up. I feel like many of my libraries need a bit more structure than what was in that document. Then the other day I found the Parents 2017: Unleashing Their Power & Potential report (https://r50gh2ss1ic2mww8s3uvjvq1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/LH_ParentsReport2017_20170719_MasterScreen_SinglePages_AN.pdf<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr50gh2ss1ic2mww8s3uvjvq1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2017%2F07%2FLH_ParentsReport2017_20170719_MasterScreen_SinglePages_AN.pdf&data=02%7C01%7Cjdwyer%40library.ohio.gov%7C7925db64c5824d8a27fa08d4e0133023%7C50f8fcc494d84f0784eb36ed57c7c8a2%7C0%7C1%7C636379820405552330&sdata=7FMw0zdCgCNmF2Jay9vfnqrGKdKxKZLsT7s4OoZrzYM%3D&reserved=0>) that talked about parents perception of their child's abilities. That has gotten me energized again. I am wondering if anyone else has been thinking about what they could do to build on the IDEA book?

The other thing I am working on is helping PA libraries move toward summer learning. My goals are to find ways to reach more kids especially in rural areas and to shrink the opportunity gap. Libraries need to be the place every child no matter the family's income can participate in programs that provide a chance to dabble in different topics and see what sticks. One of our libraries has actually provided a week long dance camp. If anyone else is heading in this direction I would like to talk with you.

And in answer to the question about collaboration software. I have nothing I can use at work. We are locked down pretty tight. I do work arounds with my iPad, computer at home and USB sticks.

Susan
