I think we can all agree that it is helpful to meet and trade notes once a month. Please take a moment to complete this short survey. You will be asked for your input about a 2018 schedule of online meetings. These meetings are voluntary-no one is required to participate or host. But we hope you will consider! Thanks in advance for your thoughts. I will close the survey next Friday, Dec. 15th. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfzq4axql0N1HQ47muZ7X3ovZRW1TH4mIEQgI2DOPe0BEjGEw/viewform?usp=sf_link ? Iris, a high school librarian (who just won county Teacher of the Year), had her students telling her that they wanted the school library to stay open longer. Iris talked to a few public libraries in her area, and they are now sending staff to cover after school hours. When Iris first mentioned this, it blew my mind. I thanked her as a former public librarian because (in my experience) school libraries rarely reach out to their public counterparts. Needless to say, the public youth librarians are thrilled to hang out with tons of teens and the teens are happy they can use their school library longer. It has really bolstered the relationships between all of the librarians participating and will hopefully lead to some more coordinated efforts for teen services. The logistics are still being ironed out: there are background checks, and the schedule includes public youth librarians from a few different local libraries. So far the result is positive. I can get more details from Iris about how this is all working if anyone is interested. Members of NC Cardinal (consortium of North Carolina public libraries that share an online catalog and ILS, administered by the State Library) are encouraged to partner with their local school district to allow students and teachers direct access to primarily electronic materials in the NC Cardinal consortium including the NC LIVE (the giant database project) with their school issued student ID numbers. Teachers can share a resource with an entire classroom for instruction. While it's true that students could also get these materials by going in to their public library using a local library card, with just their student ID number they can check out up to 10 resources with no fines or fees, no matter what the local library policy is. https://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/ld/nc-cardinal/about/projects Just yesterday I met with my "counterpart" from NC Dept. of Public Instruction (DPI), who consults for the school media coordinators or those that approximate that position in school districts. It was great to make that contact and we'll see what relationships we can help forge between more schools and public libraries in the future. We both have the sense that local schools and public libraries do cooperate some but it's spotty across the state. The whole process of selecting, booking, and paying the performers is a very convoluted process involving applications, a showcase, a booking meeting, and lots and lots of paperwork on my end. I've streamlined the process quite a bit over the past two years, but it is very time consuming and I'm doubtful of the impact it has on the summer reading program. Because we only pay $160 per program we do not get a variety of (nor high quality) performers willing to participate. Attendance numbers for these performances has been steadily declining, and every year I field complaints from directors regarding the performers that are selected. (Directors want performers that can draw/accommodate large crowds, but we can't get these types of performers because of the low $160 rate). The Youth Services Advisory Council is responsible for reviewing applications and selecting performers, however I am the middle man dealing with performers, helping libraries/performers book their programs, and maintaining a calendar of all performances throughout the state. I would really like to stop providing the performers showcase and paying for performers. It takes a lot of time to coordinate and prevents me from working on other projects that I think would be more meaningful (such as offering more training on summer learning, building more online SRP resources, etc.) And while I don't make the performer selections, it does appear that our agency is promoting a specific group of performers over another - something I'm not very comfortable with. This year I had to deal with an aggressive performer who was not selected, and we had to involve our legal department. All of this is to ask - do you have something you do to support SRP that works really well? I have supervisor support to discontinue the performers showcase, but I need to provide something in its place. I'm getting too wrapped up in my own head and would appreciate hearing what's working for you, or if you have experience in making a big change (the showcase is a decades old institution and I'm a bit nervous about the blowback!) I am planning on sending out surveys and holding a forum to gather input from librarians, too. Thank you! Also, we may already be getting an online reading program through our partnership with our state's grade level reading campaign, so I'm looking for something other than providing a service like Wandoo Reader or Beanstack. ******************* Danielle Margarida, Youth Services Coordinator Office of Library & Information Services Rhode Island Department of Administration One Capitol Hill | Providence, RI 02908-5803 401.574.9309 (voice) | 401.574.9320 (fax) | www.olis.ri.gov [veclogo-2018] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The question of state-level support for libraries' SRPs comes up here from time to time. The $$ value of support offered varies widely among states thanks to budget constraints, agency priorities, etc., but I think it's safe to say that RI's suite of support is VERY generous. In Ohio, we pay for CSLP manuals for each library building, and the CSLP membership, and that's about it for direct support with a $$ value (we also provide lots of access to resources, workshops, etc.). We do partner with the Ohio State Fair, Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (State Parks), and the Ohio Renaissance Festival to provide discount coupons to their attractions. Ohio public libraries are permitted to reproduce and distribute as many of these coupons as they wish (to summer reading program participants only) at no cost to the library. I think others of us have larger statewide incentive programs, and I'd like to add more attractions to ours. If you can work out collaborations with any area attractions, that might be an attractive replacement for the performers. And it would doubtless be less work for you! I began offering this incentive since no complete data set for SRP is captured by our annual report, and therefore, requires more staff time and organization on the end of the responding libraries. Even though I am much later in getting the manuals distributed as planned, this seems to have been appreciated anecdotally, though I did not see an increase in response to the survey; in fact, responses decreased this year, despite the incentive and reducing the number of survey questions. As you alluded to, we would never be able to provide direct funding to libraries for purchase of program materials or hiring of performers because of laws involving procurement...It's difficult enough to get a nationally known trainer approved for a workshop once every couple of years! Instead, we do house a Performer Directory on our website, which was recently redesigned to only take positive referrals, per the request of our legal team. All referrals are submitted by public library staff and moderated by myself and our web master, so other than occasionally promoting the resource, it does not take a lot of staff time or effort: https://kdla.ky.gov/librarians/programs/performershowcase/Pages/default.aspx. Additional financial support comes in the form of providing continuing education experiences, and this has changed from year to year based on our budget and responding to what I believe to be the needs or staff or larger national trends. I always do a mix of virtual and in-person training, thought in-person is more time intensive. The in-person training is conducted in the form of both smaller, regional workshops, as well as cooperative all-day workshops in tandem with our state library conference: * In the last couple of years, I have went from hosting 16 regional workshops a year - 8 in the fall and 8 in the spring - to only 8 this past fall. No workshops will be held in the spring, due to lack of interest and conflicts with our state public library conference. Recently, our administrative regions were reduced to 4 (from 8) so I am currently rethinking these meetings. Overall, I coordinate the meetings by finding host libraries, creating an agenda, and attending all meetings to facilitate discussion. All workshops are round-robin style and provide an opportunity for libraries to share their best programs, performers, and hands-on activities. By the first of the year, I will curate notes and "best practices" from theses workshops as a resource on our agency's summer reading support website: https://kdla.ky.gov/librarians/programs/summerreading/Pages/default.aspx * Before I joined the agency, there had been a history (over about 4-5 years?) of our agency hosting an annual summer reading workshop. When I joined, that conference got rolled into one which also supported bookmobile and outreach staff...then budget reductions began. I took this an opportunity to; we no longer hosted a separate conference, but instead sponsored a one-day SRP workshop at the state of our state library association conference in September. Due to the scope of the conference, we were able to also pull in school library staff, which opened up opportunities for those willing to participate. I have done this for the past couple of years to mixed success, but none every saw as much registration as did our own, stand-alone SRP conference. This last year was more successful as I was able to get speakers for free, and instead, use financial resources to provide incentives in the form of textbooks and manipulatives for all attendees (50 total). All that being said, I am exploring the option of returning to a stand-alone conference, though I prefer it to be a youth services conference, with summer reading being but one aspect of the content. However, budget reductions were just announced again (another 20%) so not sure how that will impact our plans... Thanks for sticking through my long email. Best of luck! Be brave. Be bold. I thought I'd chime in since Staci, our SRP lead, is taking a few vacation days this week. I'd go back to your goals - why you're supporting efforts and how you measure success. For Idaho, we really want to reach youth who are struggling with reading and those who face barriers getting to the library in the summer. The activities ICfL supports are designed to keep children reading over the summer, increase their access to print materials, and increase awareness of the importance of maintaining a reading routine in the summer. We're working on programs that keep school libraries open over the summer, Summer STEM micro-grants, school-public library collaborative efforts, and lots of support to encourage outreach efforts and partnerships with summer nutrition programs, etc. SR attendance in "regular" and outreach programs has never been higher, and while we believe we have a lot more work to do to ensure all youth have access to books and services over the summer, we know our efforts have made a difference statewide. We had a small advisory group get together to help us focus our efforts on these goals many years ago and that helped "sell" our efforts to the library community. See http://libraries.idaho.gov/landing/summer-reading for more details on the programs we offer. Why is ALSC developing a research agenda? This research agenda will guide our areas of research focus for the immediate future. It will clearly state the areas where new or additional research is needed to help libraries best serve youth and their families. Thanks for this thread-always interesting to hear what others do (and don?t do!) and thanks Stephanie for the reminder about goals- we need to look at that in MA I think as well and I love all your programs. In MA we provide CSLP membership, manuals to each library (online only since it was available), posters, & bookmarks. To receive these things we also require a submission of stats and comments. We also have a contract for 150 licenses of Wandoo (but it is underused). We have a partnership with the Boston Bruins and they provide funding for the paper materials (posters & bookmarks) and I put a cap on the orders depending on town population. Danielle-I would be interested in how your vouchers work as the ordering-through-me process is quite cumbersome and it?s easy for me or library staff to make mistakes on the form (1400 posters for one library!) For 2018 I am focusing more on training and to that end we have a series of webinars coming up in Jan/Feb including Project Outcome, Bedtime Math, inclusive programming and summer reading research. In March we?ll be hosting in-person workshops around the state. Our state library agency (which is not MLS, but the MBLC) has some efforts aligned with summer reading research and impact. They have run campaigns like #readfour and they put LSTA funds towards advertising (radio, social media, print and on buses!). They also work alongside us with the Bruins on providing raffle prizes, visits with the mascot and printable materials (coloring pages, mazes, etc.). Danielle, as far as dropping something? I say go for it! You may have some grumbles the first year or two (we used to provide reading logs but nixed that a few years ago-it was costly even though only a few libraries used them and there are loads of free ones in the manual! I still hear about it but it?s easy to justify; it lacked impact and served only a few.) But you will never make everyone happy. For every one person who loves the performers there is at least one who doesn?t. I think having something to ?replace? it with is a great idea and I could see you going in a few directions ? I love the micro-grant idea and wish we could do something like that at MLS but we don?t run grant programs. Or more with school/public collaboration. We?re also thinking about doing our own research in the near future. I think as long as people see that $$ going towards something else summer related most will be appeased! I thought I?d chime in since Staci, our SRP lead, is taking a few vacation days this week. I?d go back to your goals ? why you?re supporting efforts and how you measure success. For Idaho, we really want to reach youth who are struggling with reading and those who face barriers getting to the library in the summer. The activities ICfL supports are designed to keep children reading over the summer, increase their access to print materials, and increase awareness of the importance of maintaining a reading routine in the summer. We?re working on programs that keep school libraries open over the summer, Summer STEM micro-grants, school-public library collaborative efforts, and lots of support to encourage outreach efforts and partnerships with summer nutrition programs, etc. SR attendance in ?regular? and outreach programs has never been higher, and while we believe we have a lot more work to do to ensure all youth have access to books and services over the summer, we know our efforts have made a difference statewide. We had a small advisory group get together to help us focus our efforts on these goals many years ago and that helped ?sell? our efforts to the library community. The whole process of selecting, booking, and paying the performers is a very convoluted process involving applications, a showcase, a booking meeting, and lots and lots of paperwork on my end. I?ve streamlined the process quite a bit over the past two years, but it is very time consuming and I?m doubtful of the impact it has on the summer reading program. Because we only pay $160 per program we do not get a variety of (nor high quality) performers willing to participate. Attendance numbers for these performances has been steadily declining, and every year I field complaints from directors regarding the performers that are selected. (Directors want performers that can draw/accommodate large crowds, but we can?t get these types of performers because of the low $160 rate). The Youth Services Advisory Council is responsible for reviewing applications and selecting performers, however I am the middle man dealing with performers, helping libraries/performers book their programs, and maintaining a calendar of all performances throughout the state. I would really like to stop providing the performers showcase and paying for performers. It takes a lot of time to coordinate and prevents me from working on other projects that I think would be more meaningful (such as offering more training on summer learning, building more online SRP resources, etc.) And while I don?t make the performer selections, it does appear that our agency is promoting a specific group of performers over another ? something I?m not very comfortable with. This year I had to deal with an aggressive performer who was not selected, and we had to involve our legal department. All of this is to ask ? do you have something you do to support SRP that works really well? I have supervisor support to discontinue the performers showcase, but I need to provide something in its place. I?m getting too wrapped up in my own head and would appreciate hearing what?s working for you, or if you have experience in making a big change (the showcase is a decades old institution and I?m a bit nervous about the blowback!) I am planning on sending out surveys and holding a forum to gather input from librarians, too. Thank you! Also, we may already be getting an online reading program through our partnership with our state?s grade level reading campaign, so I?m looking for something other than providing a service like Wandoo Reader or Beanstack. ******************* Danielle Margarida, Youth Services Coordinator Office of Library & Information Services Rhode Island Department of Administration One Capitol Hill | Providence, RI 02908-5803 401.574.9309 (voice) | 401.574.9320 (fax) | www.olis.ri.gov [eclogo-2018] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As part of my all-encompassing youth services training duties, I provide training sessions on CSLP state-wide (10 locations in-person and 2 webinars that will be archived and available for access by librarians at their leisure). These and my travel to trainings are paid for with LSTA/IMLS funds. The trainings are fairly general and include a roundtable-style discussion of program ideas. I think they are an important part of our CSLP support because I am able to get the word out, remind people about of the program, and jump-start their planning for the summer. It also gives them an opportunity to connect with one another. With the remaining LSTA funds, we do one large special project each year for youth services librarians that is not directly related to CSLP. This has varied yearly and has included assistance with purchasing AWE computers, a ?Rock Star Librarian? program in which libraries could apply to be given guitars and ukuleles for use in programming, and most often, national trainers. We?ve had Saroj Ghoting, Betsy Diamant-Cohen, Ellyssa Kroski (for cosplay/maker workshops), and Jim Gill in somewhat recent years. I imagine if you said you weren?t going to pay for performers but you were instead going to give them something useful, or that you were going to provide them with a national trainer, it would surely soften the blow! I decided not to pursue that this year at all. For years we have also done a voucher system for libraries to purchase CSLP items from Upstart/Demco. Summer 2018 is the last year for that as well - it's over $70,000. For the smaller libraries that don't start planning that early we will still provide something in January/February. I am exploring ways to use the money that was previously spent on vouchers in a better way. There have also been many voices from our state asking for this as well. Possibilities include helping to facilitate a group purchase of an online summer reading tool subscription or doing some kind of pilot with one-time funding to wet their appetite. Other possibilities include bringing in some other subject matter experts that isn't necessarily summer reading focused because there is other training around youth services that my librarians are needing. In your case Danielle, I would say maybe you could help set up some regional showcases by turning over contact information to a lead library in several geographic areas. There used to be some kind of small, possibly regional performer showcase, but I can't find any notes on how that was coordinated and no one in the office knows for sure either. I decided not to pursue that this year at all. For years we have also done a voucher system for libraries to purchase CSLP items from Upstart/Demco. Summer 2018 is the last year for that as well - it's over $70,000. By the time I found the notes about how summer reading workshops have been coordinated from this level, it was too late to start that process. So for this year we are doing a series of webinars & tutorials. Some will be live and some will be prerecorded. All of them are going to be done by either librarians here in the state (they all volunteered) and/or myself. Going forward I am going to explore a hybrid approach with some online and some in-person training. There has been a big ask for training to happen in the fall so, I will do my best to make something happen in conjunction with the biennial NCLA conference and the biennial Youth Services Section (NCLA) retreat. But also sometimes, you just have to go cold turkey. There have been times I've had to do that and yes, there is grumbling but I've just had to show them that it was an inefficient use of my time. And I would show them what else they were getting in its place, even if it wasn't really related to the thing it was previously. I hope that makes sense. Good luck! Hi everyone, We currently support our statewide SRP by purchasing manuals, providing vouchers for the purchase of posters and reading logs, and by paying for each library (71 buildings) to have one children's performer and one teen performer. I'm getting too wrapped up in my own head and would appreciate hearing what's working for you, or if you have experience in making a big change (the showcase is a decades old institution and I'm a bit nervous about the blowback!) More news to come on that in the future, but this year CSLP was able to offer books for a low price from a Scholastic catalog geared specifically towards the Libraries Rock theme! (Hopefully you received that box to distribute along with the Demco/Upstart catalog) I know the book option has been a hit with Michigan libraries. That said, the library cooperatives in Michigan typically offer performers showcases and such, leaving that weight off my shoulders. I believe many are able to offer their co-op members special rates on the performers booked through them. This year my Youth Services Advisory Council has developed a book list around the Libraries Rock theme and I'll be having that laid out by a graphic designer and available to libraries to download & print as they wish for their patrons. Ordinarily, we do six face-to-face four-hour workshops in late October-early November. However, this year we had to alter our usual schedule because I broke my wrist in early October. As a result, we are doing four one-hour webinars in January (one for each manual) and in March, we will have six face-to-face roundtables around the state, in which further information will be provided (using the Project Outcome questionnaires to get patron feedback, among other things), and in which attendees will have the opportunity to share with each other their plans for their summer reading programs. At the workshops/roundtables, I give away incentives in drawings (tee-shirts, pins, banners, posters) and review copies of books that accumulate through the year--it's a good way to get people to arrive back from lunch on time--they have to be in the room to win if their name is drawn. Until last year, the State Library of Iowa co-sponsored a Performers' Showcase, offered in three locations throughout the state, varying from year to year. Our involvement was registration for the events through the CE catalog, offering CE hours to attendees of the live events, and I attended, managing the registration process, filming each performer's 20-minute sample, posting the videos on YouTube, and sharing the links statewide. Most of our librarians found this to be helpful in selecting programs. The Showcase is organized, locations identified, and the performers vetted by Rick Brammer, who is a book salesman by day and a magician by night. Last year, the State Library's support ended, and the event is now managed by the Youth Services Subdivision of the Iowa Library Association, which arranges for CE hours through the State Library. Someone from that group films the performers and puts them up on YouTube, then shares the links statewide on our online forum, LibraryTalk. Many of our librarians in our small libraries have found the transition from print manual to online to be confusing--and difficult in many cases. Broadband in our rural areas is limited, and Iowa is dotted with nearly 200 small telecom companies. And as others of you have pointed out, change can be difficult. Some of them have chosen to buy the print manual directly from Demco. Danielle, if it's feasible for your state library association to take over the performers showcase, that might be an option. It's worked in Iowa. Happy Holidays, everyone. Merri *Merri Monks* Youth Services Consultant *State Library of Iowa* | Des Moines Office 515.281.7572 | Merri.Monks at iowa.gov 1112 E.
