Please reply directly to Mary if you have information to share. Thanks in advance for your help. Sharon New York State Library Youth Services /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Dear State Library Youth Services Staff: New York State is looking to you for inspiration! I'm a member of our state association's legislative committee, and I'm reaching out to ask if your state's library community sought passage, successfully or unsuccessfully, of any legislation beneficial to youth and libraries. For example, NY has for two years sought passage of legislation requiring require every elementary and secondary school in NYS to provide students with a school library staffed by a certified School Library Media Specialist. (It has gained very little traction, viewed as an unfunded mandate.) On the flip side, a bill is on the Governor's desk to provide an opportunity for the taxpayer to make direct contributions to the state's "Love Your Library Fund" in support of local Summer Reading programs. Your experiences, ideas, and thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Please reply directly to me. Thanks in advance! Sincerely yours, Mary Fellows mary at uhls.lib.ny.us New York Library Association Legislative Committee Member Manager, Youth and Family Services Upper Hudson Library System 28 Essex Street, Albany, NY 12206 www.uhls.org 518-437-9880 ext. 228 Confidentiality Notice This email including all attachments is confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to which it is addressed. This really stinks since I had originally double booked myself this spring. The date simply snuck up on me as I have been out sick a few times this month, learning to cope with an experience new to me: migraines. I also had to move up my vacation week to accommodate family care, so I will be out of the office on July 26th. Again, apologies for the inconvenience. One day (after the end of our early literacy grant!) my schedule will open up. I am hoping to on jump on the 2018 chat cycle. Ideabook: Libraries for Families grew out of PLA's efforts to help libraries think more strategically about family engagement, and to learn from a variety of different approaches taken by libraries of all sizes. The Ideabook presents case studies from more than 50 diverse libraries and how they are incorporating the five "Rs" of engagement: reach out, raise up, reinforce, relate, and reimagine. This publication contains numerous helpful suggestions for how libraries can develop meaningful, lasting relationships with families in their communities to help shape children's learning and development. Family engagement is not a specific curriculum or program. For libraries, it begins by educating library leaders and staff about research-based features of successful family engagement programs. The Ideabook, along with the research-based framework outlined in our 2016 publication Public Libraries: A Vital Space for Family Engagement, can create the foundation for your library to become a leader in this movement, which is being embraced by educators, youth service providers, community action agencies, and others. Click here to download this free publication. You will be asked to provide some basic demographic information to access the file. Ideabook: Libraries for Families and Public Libraries: A Vital Space for Family Engagement are the first results of PLA's new initiative, which will help members learn about and interact effectively with the family engagement movement in their communities. Watch for more information from PLA in the coming months. Ideabook: Libraries for Families and related resources are funded by a grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The doc is here in our YSCON meetings folder: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Z5J5a--9r1Ol_VcWx219j3OkVq07kpRESzR60w8zg5I/edit?usp=sharing Instructions for calling in on August 31: Call in # 1-877-820-7831 Participant passcode 137205# I'll send a reminder a week or so before the meeting. If you plan to attend, please consider bringing the story of a notable/innovative/inspirational family engagement initiative that you are involved with, and/or that is taking place in your state. Also, you may want to look at the PLA Family Engagement initiative and its activities: http://www.ala.org/pla/initiatives/familyengagement. Also, time permitting, we could at least touch on the Poverty & Social Issues topic originally scheduled for July. Please email me if you have specific content you'd like to discuss, or questions you want to ask the group.
