I have my fingers crossed that you stay in the library field, and preferably in a role where you can keep your nationwide connections and activities going. [SAVE THE DATE] Tessa and Denise, thank you for your work on this! I guess now is a good a time as any to let this group as a whole know that I will be leaving my position at the South Dakota State Library in mid/late August. My husband is going to be pursing his life-long dream of becoming a commercial pilot so we will be moving to North Carolina (likely the Raleigh-Durham area) early next September. Of course, I will be looking for a new job in a library as they are truly my passion, but I'm willing to work wherever I can to support us (I'll be the sole income earner while my husband is in flight school). Working with this incredibly diverse and amazingly talented group of people has been an honor. I've only sent this to the YSCON group (+ Denise, who already knew) but I will be letting the CSLP State Reps know soon as well. I've let my supervisor know about this amazing opportunity and I will definitely be leaving some information for whoever my replacement will be. Because I've known this was coming since last fall, I have volunteered South Dakota to host the November YSCON call, and I think the "new me" will be plenty settled in by then to host that. In the meantime, I'll keep on trucking! You may or may not remember a few months ago when Denise Lyons (SC) and I messaged you all about a proposal that YALSA was putting together for an IMLS Leadership grant. Well guess what? It has been funded, and it benefits all state library agency youth services consultants! Basically, YALSA will being bringing us all together to talk (face to face!!!) and learn about continuing education and teen services. You can read the full press release below or here: http://www.ala.org/yalsa/national-forum-transforming-teen-services-through-continuing-education MOST IMPORTANTLY....As a part of this grant, YALSA will host a 1.5 day national forum immediately following the 2017 YA Services Symposium in Louisville, KY. One representative from each state library agency will be invited to attend and participate. Representatives will be nominated by their state library agency's chief officer. If you are interested in attending, please let your chief officer know. The national forum is scheduled for Nov. 6 - 7, 2017 (all day the 6th, half day the 7th). Virtual participation opportunities will be available and open to everyone between Jan. and April 2018. This effort brings together state library agency (SLA) youth consultants with thought leaders in libraries, youth development, afterschool programming, professional development, and more. The Forum will leverage both in-person and virtual discussions, and will lead to the publication of a report outlining priorities in continuing education in teen services in public libraries. This project is supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Read the grant proposal (.pdf). Recent reports such as the Aspen Institute's "Rising to the Challenge: Re-Envisioning Public Libraries," and YALSA's IMLS-funded "The Future of Library Services for and with Teens: A Call to Action" outline a new vision for public libraries and teen services that can only be achieved by building the knowledge and skills of library staff. While some schools of library and information science are looking at how to re-imagine their curricula for pre-service library staff, it is also essential that at the same time there is a united effort to develop strategic directions for cultivating the skills of those already working in the field. SLA staff play a critical leadership role in the development and delivery of library-related continuing education (CE) to front line library staff. By gathering together a youth services representative from each of the 50 SLAs and other key stakeholders to inform the development of a report that sets a national agenda on continuing education for teen services, YALSA and COSLA will achieve the first step toward developing a coordinated, efficient, and effective process for transforming teen services throughout the U.S., so that teen programs and services enhance civic and cultural engagement, facilitate lifelong learning, promote digital inclusion, and support economic vitality. Contact Linda Braun, YALSA's CE Consultant with questions. To receive updates on the project, such as when the virtual discussions will be held and to receive a copy of the final report, please complete this brief form. However, she spoke to our group on advocacy and building your case when working with management to expand resources at your library for teen services. I know it sounds a bit dry, but it was a highly interactive workshop and our participants came away exteremely pleased and inspired. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi Cathy and YSCON, In Iowa, our state-wide early literacy program is not quite parallel to what you have described, but I'll share it with you anyway. It's called the Bridge to Reading Picture Book Award (http://www.bridgetoreading.com/), so named this because its origins were in Dubuque, a city along the Mississippi River in northeast Iowa. It began as a grant-supported local project and is now a state-wide children's choice award, managed by the Youth Services Subdivision of the Iowa Library Association. A committee of librarians, preschool teachers and early literacy specialists choose ten picture books each year in August that are chosen specifically for their suitability for read-alouds with groups of children, and the youngest of our citizens then vote for their favorite. The winner is announced in the spring. Libraries use the list for collection development, and some of our larger communities provide copies of the books to their local preschools and daycare centers. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi Cathy, In RI our statewide reading program is for kids in grades 4-6 and is called Kids Reading Across Rhode Island (KRARI for short). It?s a spinoff of the RI Center for the Book?s adult one book program, Reading Across Rhode Island. We?re in our 8th year and have our big event planned for this Saturday. KRARI serves as a kickoff to SRP and each year the selected book fits with the SRP theme (this year?s book is Save Me a Seat, last year our book was Roller Girl and we had a lot of fun with our local roller derby teams). At the event the author signs books and speaks, and we have public libraries and local organizations offer activity tables and promote their summer programs. We also distribute copies of the book to libraries and schools for book discussions. The past few years we?ve had additional funding to offer enrichment programs based on the book at public libraries throughout the summer. We currently don?t have an early literacy one book program, but now you have my wheels turning! Hi Cathy and YSCON, In Iowa, our state-wide early literacy program is not quite parallel to what you have described, but I'll share it with you anyway. We also have a program that is developing through the Iowa Center for the Book (http://www.iowacenterforthebook.org/) that is a one book, one state read for teens (we've had one for adults for a number of years)--but not for younger children at this point. The recording is burned onto a CD and sent, with the book, to the child. Psrents can do this once a month. When the incarcerated parent is released, he or she is given a backpack of books, matching the ages of their children, to foster opportunities to continue reading in the family. Go to the Library For the hungry kids of Columbus, Ohio the public library is about much, much more than books. Thanks in part to a $4,000 startup grant from No Kid Hungry, kids can get an afterschool snack at local library branches across Columbus. Lots of kids come to the library in the afternoon to get help with homework or just to have a safe place to hang out. Now they can get something to eat as well. ?We were really aware that the students coming to the library oftentimes did not have a healthy snack or meal waiting for them at home after school,? said Erica Sevilla of the local Children?s Hunger Alliance. ?So we knew if we could provide meals or snacks, they could focus better on homework.? The program could go statewide ? the Alliance is already getting calls from other libraries in Ohio. This program enables incarcerated parents, via the assistance of a VNSIA staff member or volunteer and a digital recording device, to read a book to their child. The recording is burned onto a CD and sent, with the book, to the child. Psrents can do this once a month. When the incarcerated parent is released, he or she is given a backpack of books, matching the ages of their children, to foster opportunities to continue reading in the family. Here is an article, published in the Des Moines Register recently, about The Storybook Project: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/life/2017/05/11/storybook-incarcerated-mothers-iowa-reading/315476001/ There have been two correctional institutions involved -- one housing men, one women -- with a third one recently added (also for men). While I asked a colleague a couple of years ago in the Department of Education whether there was anything along these lines in Iowa, I was told at that time that he didn't know of anything. (I had read about a similar program in Minnesota). However, this program has been ongoing for 20 years, without any apparent collaboration with the State Library and/or the public libraries in the state. I'm attempting to change that. The conference planning committee of the Iowa Library Association is looking for a way to include a session with the coordinators of this program at our fall conference (the program is filled--and if not this year, then next year), and I'm hoping also to produce a webinar for our public libraries, informing them of The Storybook Project and suggesting ways they may participate. I'm still sorting through the details of how this can best work, and am sending this email to inquire whether any of you have worked on projects collaborating efforts like this on a statewide basis? Here in Colorado, the State Library?s Institutional Library Development (ILD) Bureau coordinates a similar program called Read to the Children. It?s in 19 facilities, including prisons and youth correctional facilities. All facilities can record offenders on audio recordings, and many now can do video recordings too. ILD coordinate the program and provide training on it to the library staff in the facilities, who implement it. Each spring, we couple that program with One Book 4 Colorado, which gives a copy of the same book to every 4 year old in the state through public libraries. With this, offenders who have preschool aged kids records him/herself reading the selected book to be given away, and when the child receives the recording, it comes with info about the program so they know they can pick up the book for free at their local public library. We?ve heard many stories about the kids and caregivers going to the library for the first time to get the free book. We?ve also approached it the other way-- jointly presenting to ROAR clinic staff on the same content during training sessions for them. We?ve had booths at a few of each other?s events, allowing for more cross-promotion at the state level. While unfortunately we haven?t tracked the outcomes, the trainings do seem to have increased awareness of both library and ROAR staff, and anecdotally increased local clinic-library partnerships somewhat, though there hasn?t been a groundswell of collaboration resulting from it (mostly some cross-promotion). Hope that helps; good luck!
