Hungry? Go to the Library

For the hungry kids of Columbus, Ohio the public library is about much, much more than books.

Thanks in part to a $4,000 startup grant from No Kid Hungry, kids can get an afterschool snack at local library branches across Columbus. Lots of kids come to the library in the afternoon to get help with homework or just to have a safe place to hang out. Now they can get something to eat as well.

“We were really aware that the students coming to the library oftentimes did not have a healthy snack or meal waiting for them at home after school,” said Erica Sevilla of the local Children’s Hunger Alliance. “So we knew if we could provide meals or snacks, they could focus better on homework.”

The program could go statewide — the Alliance is already getting calls from other libraries in Ohio.

When No Kid Hungry is able to help communities create programs like this one, we can change kids’ lives. Your generosity is what makes it possible.

Grandmas on Our Side [VIDEO]

In impoverished Greeleyville, South Carolina, hunger haunts many families. It’s especially hard for kids in the summer when school meals disappear. But thanks to an inspired and creative group of grandmothers, many of those kids will have something to eat every day this summer.

With No Kid Hungry’s support, these determined women set up pickup spots all across Greeleyville where children could get free meals. They chose places where kids would already be, from local hair salons to daycare centers, and even some neighborhood homes.
