[yscon] [External] Welcome packets for new librarians

Good morning!

Like North Carolina, we have a guide that we share with new librarians (or new to the Commonwealth): http://guides.masslibsystem.org/youthservices (that the awesome April Mazza created and maintains.) We also offer to visit the new librarian so that we can talk through our services in person. Out of those meetings we get ideas of what else to share, then we send follow-up emails with more info.

Thanks for sharing your guide, Jasmine!

Best,
Christi

Hi Stephanie,

I don’t know if anything like that has existed in the past here in North Carolina but we have a fairly robust (though out of date) website http://statelibrary.ncdcr.libguides.com/youthservices. The State Library of North Carolina has been moving its web content off of LibGuides to Drupal.

If I were to create something specifically for new librarians I would chose to do things with more e-content for two reasons: 1) the speed at which information changes would make constantly updating static documents laborious, and 2) I’d rather save the trees. Likely though, I’ll just be updating our website information and content, then sending the new librarians an email to have them look over what is there. It will be for all youth services librarians, not just the new ones though.

Best,
Jasmine
Thanks,

Hi Everyone,

Really happy to be on the listserv now!

Have a question… do any of you have welcome packets for new librarians who will be offering YS services? I’m thinking lists of library acronyms, storytime basics, or anything else you would hand to a para-professional or degreed librarian to help them acclimatize to their new role. Any samples would be helpful.

Thanks,
