[yscon] [External] Welcome packets for new librarians

I would gladly collaborate on some sort of "New YS Librarian" content, and am open to what that would look like. My predecessor, Heather Dieffenbach, created a webinar along this topic, but aimed at library directors - updating is also on my ever-growing list of to-do's, as the training will turn 3 years old this February:

The ABC's and 123's of Early Childhood Services in Public Libraries<http://kdla.adobeconnect.com/p3tl73edfit/>
Directors, administrators, trustees, and managers - Join us for a crash course in early childhood services for public libraries. We will look at the need for early childhood services and the value they can add to our library and communities. We will discuss high quality library early childhood programs and highlight how your library can be a valuable community partner and stakeholder in state and local early childhood initiatives. (2/25/15)

P.S. Can I just say/whine about how much I love everyone else's beautiful websites! I wish our state has more elegant (and modern!) web solutions. For what it's worth, feel free to peruse my pages - in addition to updating the SRP site, I need to devote more time to flushing out resources for the generic Youth Services page: https://kdla.ky.gov/librarians/programs/Pages/ChildrenYA.aspx

This has me thinking... along with the discussion on YALSA competencies; what if YSCON joined together to develop a basic youth services packet such as Stephanie is referring to? I do not have anything in MI, but Storytime competencies has been on my (long) list of things to-do.

I agree with Jasmine, e-content would be best.
Soon I'll be sharing a closed-captioned webinar on "Put the Book Down & Engage" with Jenifer Strauss to this list. Meanwhile, I can share our archived ECRR webinars with Sue McCleaf Nespeca: http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,2351,7-160-18668_63014-301245--,00.html

Feel free to share those as you need to.

Hi Stephanie,

I don't know if anything like that has existed in the past here in North Carolina but we have a fairly robust (though out of date) website http://statelibrary.ncdcr.libguides.com/youthservices. The State Library of North Carolina has been moving its web content off of LibGuides to Drupal.

If I were to create something specifically for new librarians I would chose to do things with more e-content for two reasons: 1) the speed at which information changes would make constantly updating static documents laborious, and 2) I'd rather save the trees. Likely though, I'll just be updating our website information and content, then sending the new librarians an email to have them look over what is there. It will be for all youth services librarians, not just the new ones though.

Best,
Jasmine
Thanks,

Hi Everyone,

Really happy to be on the listserv now!

Have a question... do any of you have welcome packets for new librarians who will be offering YS services? I'm thinking lists of library acronyms, storytime basics, or anything else you would hand to a para-professional or degreed librarian to help them acclimatize to their new role. Any samples would be helpful.

Thanks,
