Hi Krista, I?ve been working with Jackson here in Missouri, because we are going to bring a Girls Who Code webinar to Missouri library staff. I initially contacted him to ask him to bid on a Code at the Library webinar, and as a result, he offered to instead hold a Girls Who Code webinar for free. After looking into the program further, we decided this was definitely a resource we wanted our library staff to know about, and we are moving forward with that project. My guess is that after speaking with me about this project, he then realized this might be of interest to other State Libraries. So far, he?s enthusiastic and easy to work with. We?re going to host the webinar on our platform and archive it, so that Missouri library staff know more about Girls Who Code and how they can use the free resources and start their own Girls Who Code clubs. If anyone would like to attend our webinar to hear more, I can get that out to you. We are delaying on the project until the end of November, due to scheduling, and so that we can hold Code at Your Library first. Basically, they just want to get the message and resources out, so if other states want to hold a Girls Who Code webinar, my guess is they would be very happy to do that?and for free. Dear Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archive, Following up to see if you have 15 minutes to connect to discuss your goals for computer science education in Kentucky and how our programs can complement those goals. In just 5 years, Girls Who Code has taught 40,000 middle and high school girls across all 50 states to code. To put that in perspective, only 10,000 girls graduate every year with Computer Science degrees. That means in 5 short years, we?ve quadrupled the pipeline. By the end of the 2017-2018 academic year, we hope to teach a total of 100,000 girls to code and would love to partner with Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archive to bring free computer science opportunities to middle and high school girls in your community. Partnership benefits include: ? 120+ hours of curriculum, activity sets, and an online learning management system ? Recruitment materials, including student and volunteer flyers ? Program management support, including field trip and grant opportunities ? Club Facilitator trainings, resources and real-time support ? Access to Girls Who Code?s network of Clubs across the US through virtual and in-person meet-ups Please let me know if you have any questions or if any other information would be helpful. I look forward to hearing from you! Today, less than a quarter of computing jobs are held by women, and that number is declining. Our organization is working to reverse the decline. Last year, we reached 40,000 girls in all 50 states and we hope to reach 100,000 by the end of 2018 through our Clubs Program. We would love to work with the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, to bring Clubs to 6-12 grade girls in Kentucky! Our Clubs are free after-school programs for 6-12th grade girls to use computer science to impact their community and join our sisterhood of supportive peers and role models. They can be hosted in schools, universities, libraries, community centers, faith-based organizations, or nonprofits. There's ZERO fee to start a Club. And welcome to Bethany from Texas! Thank you Tessa for these monthly updates and invitations. I want to share that the Ohio Library Council convention took place last week (this is our state library conference for public librarians/library staff). It was exceptional. Strong, thoughtful sessions, and even better conversations in the hallways. And we had a lovely reception at the amazing brand-new Dayton Metro Library's main library (www.daytonmetrolibrary.org/locations/main). I think part of what made this event so powerful, sadly, was that it took place at a time when we are all feeling burdened and troubled, on our patrons' behalf and our own. I had signed up, months ago, to present one of a handful of brief talks on hot topics/timely issues. Speakers choose topics of interest to them, which this year included screen time, the love/hate relationship with SRP, a critique of "neutrality", reliability and government information, and more. They are sort-of modeled after TED talks, but no A/V and you can read from your scripted remarks, which I did, and not without fighting back tears a little. The topic I'd chosen was empathy and its importance as a professional asset. It seemed even more relevant now than back in the winter when I'd submitted my proposal. People are in such dire need of connection and acknowledgement, and we serve our communities better when we truly take into account the realities of everyone in the community. I was humbled both by being able to talk to a big roomful of peers about something like this, and by the tremendous response. Also I want to share Teen Think Tank, an excellent informal/grassroots CE event developed and presented 2x/year by a team of Ohio teen librarians. They just completed their 9th one-day workshop, and also recently topped 1000 Facebook followers. The Teen Think Tank organizers have had a bit of in-kind support from one of the Ohio regional library systems, and from State Library, and of course the support of their employers and hosting libraries. But effectively they have accomplished all this awesomeness on their own, and with a budget of nothing but the $15/person (includes lunch) registration fee. Jasmine, let us know if you are still willing/able to host November's meeting. Speaking of November, many of us are scheduled to meet in Louisville as part of the YALSA forum. Looking at the great info that Janet put together, we have almost 24 people who are open to dinner on Sunday evening. I looked into it, and I couldn't find a restaurant within walking distance that would take such a large group. Therefore, I am wondering if we should split the group and look for 2 restaurants that could host 12 each or 3 that could host 8. If you?re curious to see what it?s all about, here is the link to our guide and agenda: http://guides.masslibsystem.org/youthservices/ts It?s a year-long labor of love, jointly planned by the MA and RI youth service consultants. I?m sure Danielle will be able to share lots of info in Louisville :) Sadly, I no longer will be able to attend dinner on Sunday. Our MA Library System annual meeting is on Monday, Nov. 6 so I had to change my flight to get back for that. We work with Ufund Start U Reading program as part of MEFA (Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority). Mostly what we do is connect public libraries with the program coordinator to hold programs at their libraries that feature a costumed character (like Clifford or Elmo). There?s a storytime and UFund info for parents and photo ops. I actually had Clifford at my library (many years ago) and it was a wonderful program and effortless for us library staff to put together. I?m attaching a recap from the program coordinator, Sherri Galego. I am sure she would be happy to speak with anyone about the program. Her contact info is in the recap. We actually have a phone call scheduled with her for next week to talk about how this year?s visits have gone and other ways to work together. Also in the past we?ve helped her finding booklists to promote at events and on her blog (like from CSLP for summer reading) and resources on Pinterest. Hope this helps! This was something I was speaking to a CE Team Member about yesterday, as she said there is a lot of great feedback about a recent "Tween Programming" course that was completed. For these courses, spots are available on a first come, first served basis. I was able to give out a dozen travel scholarships to the upcoming YALSA Symposium, since the conference is in our state (and I'm hoping to get approval to do this again for the ALSC conference next fall). This was something I was speaking to a CE Team Member about yesterday, as she said there is a lot of great feedback about a recent "Tween Programming" course that was completed. For these courses, spots are available on a first come, first served basis. New National Park Service Toolkit for Librarians Good afternoon, Kentucky Certified Local Governments! As a partner with our office and the National Park Service, I am pleased to share a new library resource. As CLGs,you all have significant historic resources, so please bring this program to the attention of your local libraries! This toolkit, which includes a template and instructions to adapt local resources for a library storytime, can be used to bring history alive in your own backyards! And please let me know if your library makes good use of it! I would love to be able to share that with NPS and on social media. Have a great week! There is no charge and no local Park is required to take advantage. Discover the new Storytime with Historic Places model. The website includes a template and instructions to feature historic places in storytime programs. Download a sample SwHP, written by a school librarian who used a national headquarters for the 20th century women's movement to create a storytime about civics and civil rights. The sample storytime comes with a booklist, materials, prompts, and fun activity. The National Park Service supports libraries and librarians in-person and online. If a library is too far from a Park or the park can't send a Ranger, the wide range of digital assets can help spark library patrons' curiosity and their imaginations. #FindYourPark at NPS.gov Katie Orr Historian Education Coordinator, CR Office of Interpretation & Education National Park Service 1849 C Street NW, Mail Stop 7360, Washington, DC 20240 Telephone: 202-354-2238 -- Sent from iPad -- Sent from iPad -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... So if you're looking to host workshops, seeking performers, or even, as we just experimented with, host live webinars! For your eyes only (please), I'm sharing our recording from yesterday. We had a brief technical glitch about 1/2 way through when the video feed froze, but the sound stayed on, so use those "movie screen" brains to imagine what you'd do when telling that story. Video came back up after a few minutes! http://libraryofmichigan.adobeconnect.com/psmo0vvpg0hw/. We also need to finesse sound coming through her mic. Anyway, just wanted to give her a plug! Attached is the series of webinars we're doing in Michigan and her bio. Thanks, Cathy Lancaster Youth Services Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 W.
