NJ had a statewide contract with Tutor.com over 10 years ago and it worked well. The students loved it and the tutors were vetted teachers. We received grant funding from a business to fund it for three years - the maximum years allowed for a grant from that business. So in my previous job, we had explored a statewide contract for Tutor.com. It was trialed and got rave reviews by everyone - parents, kids, teens, librarians. But because of silly, political, complicated reasons we never were able to offer it. None of those reasons were legal reasons though - it would have been a statewide subscription service. Here in North Carolina, when access to an electronic resource is desired, it is either coordinated by NC Live - which the State Library contributes to financially but it is an independent entity - or a consortium contract is formed by the libraries who want the resource, like NC Kids - which is paid for by public libraries. I know I'm not a ton of help, but I am a big fan of things like Tutor.com or Brainfuse. And I'd say unless there is something really big, really new, or really difficult that we need to share with the group that we have just those people speak. We do have this listserv and we check in with each other so frequently that we should be able to focus our discussion appropriately on the big stuff. For the actual discussion, I personally like a more directed conversation as far as topic/s go-which can still be done in a pass-the-mic structure but lets people think about it a bit more ahead of time so the discussion is focused. If so, researchers at the University of Washington Information School invite you to participate in a virtual survey about programs and services you are offering outside of library walls for children and families in underserved communities. Click the link below to learn more about the study or to give your consent to complete the survey. UW Project LOCAL Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2NNYGDG Once you click on the link, you will be taken to a consent form where you can choose whether or not to participate in the study. If you choose to participate, you will be taken directly into the survey. This survey should take less than 30 minutes to complete. If at any time during the survey you would prefer not to finish, you can stop. We will keep each individual?s responses confidential. We will not disclose which libraries were represented nor who did or did not participate in the study. If you have any questions about the study please contact the Project LOCAL team at localuw at uw.edu. This report summarizes the work of YALSA and COSLA over the past year regarding CE for teen services, including the convening of SLA YSCONs in Louisville last fall. The feedback form links to the survey and to the web page for background info on this project: www.surveymonkey.com/r/ttsce_draft_report_feedback Unrelated, but to save sending a separate email, I copied the CSLP Statistics Committee presentation and the CSLP ad hoc Child Well-Being Committee presentation to the YSCON Google Drive. You or librarians in your state might be interested in submitting a session proposal. Last year's event had attendees from 20 states. The smaller size and youth services focus of this national conference has big appeal. Thanks for considering, Tessa Michaelson Schmidt Public Library Youth and Inclusive Services Consultant Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (608) 267-5077 tessa.schmidt at dpi.wi.gov Call for Proposals: Power Up Conference in Leadership for Youth Services Managers and Staff, March 28-29, 2019 About the Conference Do you have ideas to share about management and leadership in Youth Services? The University of Wisconsin-Madison Information School is pleased to offer the second Power Up Conference to share your exciting ideas! The conference will take place in Madison, Wisconsin on March 28-29, 2019. The program committee will be accepting proposals until August 3, 2018. Topics may include, but are not limited to: strategic planning, collaborations, ethics, leadership pathways, advocacy, mentorship, managing change, work/life balance, staff motivation, and innovation. Youth services librarians and staff from public libraries, schools, after-school programs, museums, etc. are invited to attend - we had 142 attendees from 20 states at the 2017 conference! You may find the program from the 2017 conference here: https://ischool.wisc.edu/continuing-education/power-up/2017/ Our opening keynote address speaker is Andrew Medlar, former ALSC President and current director of BookOps, serving the New York Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library. Our closing keynote will be presented by Sarah Park Dahlen, Assistant Professor of Library and Information Science at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN. Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Statement The Program Committee encourages a diversity of presenters representing a variety of personal and professional backgrounds, perspectives, and voices. We encourage submissions from anyone who is interested in presenting, including students, new professionals, first-time presenters, and representatives of allied professions. Proposal Evaluation The committee will evaluate all of the submissions as individual entries, and how they fit within the balance of conference content as a whole. The Program Committee will evaluate all proposals submitted by the deadline using the following criteria: * Clarity and completeness of the proposal, particularly having well-developed content and sufficient speakers to address all relevant aspects of the topic; * Originality and relevance of the proposed topic; * Uniqueness of content in relation to other conference presentations; * A range of speaker experiences and representations How to submit a proposal Please submit a 200-250 word description of your proposed session to Meredith Lowe, mclowe at wisc.edu, by August 3, 2018. Sessions at the conference will be one hour. Please include an additional sentence or two about how this proposal aligns with our diversity, inclusion and equity statement outlined above. Note that the proposal will not be the finalized description for the conference program; the committee will contact selected proposal submitters for a final draft. Panel presentations are accepted. Many thanks to the 13 YSCons on the line and to several others who wrote up their contributions for the collaborative notes. Check out what your colleagues are working on in the area of teen services, and add your thoughts/ideas: docs.google.com/document/d/1RACT93gVYBfGvX_Y5CUODDaVOq7fFVBrkQMehwc-oIU/edit?usp=sharing A few common themes that emerged: *Much focus at policy level, as well as in libraries, is on early childhood. How to communicate and convince of the value of services to teens? *Very small, isolated libraries may struggle to see need for teen services, let alone how they as library staff can have an impact (Note that the May YSCON meeting on Wed., 5/16 is on "Supporting rural/isolated libraries or libraries with small staffs") *Coding has a lot of momentum and interest at the policy level - a good "in" for enhancing services to middle & high school students. Also think about the emphasis on career and college readiness *Importance of reaching out to library directors, and to staff who don't often work with teens. We did not talk much about the YALSA initiative, as it is so big and our time was so short. Several are using the new YALSA Competencies - including Danielle (RI) where the competencies are being leveraged in developing outcomes for grant-funded teen services projects. Others are not (yet) or have no active plans. Feel free to share additional input on the Google Doc or on the listserv. We have that filled....now just need the Data Coordinator). Wish I could have joined you! I am looking forward to working with the Teen Competencies resources shared, and I will add what is happening right now in MD to the document sometime today. Last Thursday I held my Spring YSC meeting, which included a one hour activity co-led by Mega Subramaniam and me. (You all may remember Mega from the YALSA COSLA National Forum where she spoke about the XY Program, Teens and libraries; she is a YALSA Board Member.) We created a needs assessment/survey that I sent throughout the state to my YSC and teen librarians a few weeks ago, where they looked at the ten competency areas and assessed their areas of strengths and areas they need to strengthen. Based on our analysis of their responses, Mega and I broke the YSC into two groups at the meeting, honing in on the two areas identified by the survey as areas where they think they need strengthening of their skills or practices. The survey results and the comments from this Activity at the meeting will inform much of the Teen Competencies training and focus areas for me this coming year. I will share more details about the Activity we conducted at my meeting in the Document. Everyone have a great rest of your week! Hi everyone, Also sorry to miss.....I was in interviews all day for the State Data Coordinator position for which we are hiring (Tessa knows all about having this vacancy, along with an LSTA Coordinator. Sorry to miss the online meeting today, I was actually meeting with reps from Scholastic to discuss some summer reading options? However, I wanted to say that I will be using the new YALSA Competencies tomorrow at a Teen Services training that I?m doing, and I am very grateful to everyone who helped put together the PowerPoint and saved me so much work! *Very small, isolated libraries may struggle to see need for teen services, let alone how they as library staff can have an impact (Note that the May YSCON meeting on Wed., 5/16 is on ?Supporting rural/isolated libraries or libraries with small staffs?) *Coding has a lot of momentum and interest at the policy level ? a good ?in? for enhancing services to middle & high school students. Also think about the emphasis on career and college readiness *Importance of reaching out to library directors, and to staff who don?t often work with teens. We did not talk much about the YALSA initiative, as it is so big and our time was so short. Several are using the new YALSA Competencies ? including Danielle (RI) where the competencies are being leveraged in developing outcomes for grant-funded teen services projects. Others are not (yet) or have no active plans. Feel free to share additional input on the Google Doc or on the listserv.
