Here's the query: "Our Library is currently in the process of applying for sexual harassment/molestation insurance. Also, would you happen to know (or know where we can find information on) whether or not there is an existing policy (or a "better practices" guideline) that determines a ratio of staff-to-participant requirement (in this case specifically teens) when it comes to library programs/events?" In MA it is here: https://www.mass.gov/guides/guide-to-workplace-conduct MLS has a policy collection but that was the only one we had under sexual harassment (which for some reason is under patron behavior but it would probably be good for libraries to address harassment from patrons in their policy as well). Here is that collection if you are interested and feel free to direct people to it for other policy help: http://guides.masslibsystem.org/mapolicycollection For staffing ratios it also might be helpful to look to state standards for childcare. I don?t think there are any laws that pertain to library staff but I would say at least 2 staff for large events would be a ?best practice?. I?d be curious to know what others think too, also for the minimum # of staff in the building. As far as I know that is usually up to the director though we also have some one-person libraries here! Message-ID: Good morning, In preparation for a talk I'm giving next week, I'm curious to know what trends, innovations, emerging best practices, etc. you are seeing in summer library programs. I'm interested both in general trends, like the increased attention to family engagement or the adoption of outcome-based planning, and ideas specific to a music-themed SRP, like singing competitions. In Ohio, the movement away from traditional reading-only challenges and toward reading/activity hybrids continues. Also, a small but growing number of libraries are letting participants set their own goals and eliminating the standard completion goal. Some have established community-wide goals (all together, the community reads X amount and/or volunteers/donates X amount, etc.). Specific to the "Libraries Rock!" theme, several Ohio libraries are looking to purchase sets of ukuleles, with the intention to offer basic ukulele instruction as a program/series. After the summer, we hope they will add the ukuleles to their circulating collections (another lively trend is non-traditional circulating collections like bikes, guitars, museum passes, and tech toys). Our LSTA coordinator and I are threatening to send hashtag #CircTheUkes out into the world. :) What are you seeing going on in your states and libraries? Message-ID: Janet and All, I am grappling with this, too. I like the ideas behind the reading and activity based goals. Our state does require numbers as far as books for reporting to the ILMS for LSTA purposes. We have just started using circulation statistics for different age groups to standardize what we are reporting. This year we asked for one impact story on a participant of family and some of the stories we got were amazing. They included stories about children, teens, families, blind children, children with autism, and even one about an elderly woman. Such wide ranging impact. Some of them brought tears to my eyes. Some of these stories will go into our report to the IMLS. I am looking forward to hearing everyone?s ideas. Also I would like to know how others standardize and quantify what quantitative statistics we do need to collect. I?m all ears! Gail Gail A. We also use KitKeeper here at ISL to manage our book, storytime, LEGO, and DUPLO kits. We've had it for about 9 months. We circulate our kits using a statewide courier service. (KitKeeper is a management/database system; it won't help you with the shipping of kits.) I find KitKeeper to be fine. It is very inexpensive and for that reason we are willing to overlook some of the drawbacks/less excellent qualities. It's not very adaptive. They can change things like loan periods, time between loans, etc. However, they cannot make larger adaptations. For instance, when someone reserves a kit there is one "Name" slot. I'd like there to be two name slots (I won't go into details on why). But they "can't" add a second Name line for me. It seems like this would be very simple to code, but is a no-go. I suspect they just have the one basic program and perhaps don't have the manpower to alter the structure for just one client. Additionally, I find it difficult to get the statistics I need from the system as-is. But then again, these are likely the reasons why it' so inexpensive. Otherwise, they were accommodating and helpful as we set the system up. They respond relatively quickly to questions. You can view our instance here: http://www.eventkeeper.com/kitkeeper/index.cfm?curOrg=ingovhome Let me know if you questions! It?s been a very disrupted several weeks with days off for vacation and bad weather. I know we had a discussion about this last August because we posted some of the links to family engagement brochures that some of our states had developed in collaboration with our DOEs, like Carrie?s from Maryland, and the one I worked on with my state?s DOE. It was done in preparation for the family engagement session for the YSCon monthly meeting last August 31st. Here?s the link to all the resources we posted in a Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Z5J5a--9r1Ol_VcWx219j3OkVq07kpRESzR60w8zg5I/edit?usp=sharing To address your question about how to approach them to include libraries, I?ve been lucky enough that they contacted me to be included in the discussion. It?s taken years to get to this point. I started by inviting the State Director of our Head Start Collaboration Office to lunch years ago and we?ve been working together since. She introduced me to her contacts at our DOE and I offered to work with them as well. I?ve also shared the Public Libraries: A Vital Space for Family Engagement publication with them. Aside for the family engagement brochure, our group hasn?t met in a few months but I?m hoping we?ll do so soon. Since we have a statewide listserv for youth services librarians, I can send out resources from the DOE to the library staff. We?ve also exhibited or presented at each other?s conferences. ~Sharon Best regards, Sharon Rawlins, MLS Youth Services Specialist for Lifelong Learning NJ State Library 185 West State St. P.O. I?m wondering if it would be possible for us to pick one time zone and use that for the meeting list to be consistent, would that help lessen the time difference issue? It also helps that she is familiar with CSLP, as she has worked on the children's program manual for several year. I highlighted in yellow the portion I thought would be of interest to this group. Washington State has never had a courier system for libraries so our innovation was figuring out a way for us to keep the kits moving from library to library without charging the hosting library for shipping costs. Our administrative assistants are able to email the shipping label to the library which has the kit and this covers the shipping costs from one library location to the next library location. The biggest problem: watch the DIMENSIONS of the shipping boxes. The Mindstorms kit has proven to be a problem. When we bought the cases, they were not considered "oversize". Occasionally someone at Fed Ex does a "spot check". The shipping costs then skyrockets from $15 to $90. It would be ideal for all staff, especially those on the front lines. https://mostatelibrary.watch.more.net/#/videos/a5d6e945-f1fa-40d9-ba2d-b423b2ab35bb. The presenter comes at the issue from a different perspective. I found it to be insightful, and I've been to several webinars on this topic in the last couple of years. This was by far my favorite. Feel free to take a look and/or share this out with others who may be interested in the webinar, the presenter, or even his book. Here's the official blurb: Does your public library struggle with patrons who are homeless, addicted and mentally ill? This super practical webinar taught how to engage problematic homeless patrons with confidence and compassion. The presenter, Ryan Dowd, has spent his career running a large homeless shelter outside of Chicago and is the author of the ALA book, "The Librarian's Guide to Homelessness."
