[yscon] Trends/innovations in SRP?

Janet and All,

I am grappling with this, too. I like the ideas behind the reading and activity based goals. Our state does require numbers as far as books for reporting to the ILMS for LSTA purposes. We have just started using circulation statistics for different age groups to standardize what we are reporting. This year we asked for one impact story on a participant of family and some of the stories we got were amazing. They included stories about children, teens, families, blind children, children with autism, and even one about an elderly woman. Such wide ranging impact. Some of them brought tears to my eyes. Some of these stories will go into our report to the IMLS.

I am looking forward to hearing everyone’s ideas. Also I would like to know how others standardize and quantify what quantitative statistics we do need to collect. I’m all ears!

Subject: [yscon] Trends/innovations in SRP?

Good morning,

In preparation for a talk I’m giving next week, I’m curious to know what trends, innovations, emerging best practices, etc. you are seeing in summer library programs.

I’m interested both in general trends, like the increased attention to family engagement or the adoption of outcome-based planning, and ideas specific to a music-themed SRP, like singing competitions.

In Ohio, the movement away from traditional reading-only challenges and toward reading/activity hybrids continues. Also, a small but growing number of libraries are letting participants set their own goals and eliminating the standard completion goal. Some have established community-wide goals (all together, the community reads X amount and/or volunteers/donates X amount, etc.).

Specific to the “Libraries Rock!” theme, several Ohio libraries are looking to purchase sets of ukuleles, with the intention to offer basic ukulele instruction as a program/series. After the summer, we hope they will add the ukuleles to their circulating collections (another lively trend is non-traditional circulating collections like bikes, guitars, museum passes, and tech toys). Our LSTA coordinator and I are threatening to send hashtag #CircTheUkes out into the world. :)

What are you seeing going on in your states and libraries?

Thanks,
Janet
