I am also attending ALSC in September for the first time and have been to YALSA twice and greatly enjoyed this conference. I also greatly appreciate some less library-traditional conference option ideas. I agree that this give us another lens to view our work and it extends our circle of contacts. One other conference that falls into this category that I can suggest is NAMLE (National Association of Media Literacy Education). I have not attended their conference, but there is overlap in our work with media/digital literacy in youth, and there is a group of us in MD currently working on tentative plans to cross-partner with them when their conference in Washington, DC overlaps with ALA in 2019. One possible session we are exploring focuses on Media Mentorship as we enhance best practices in this area in library staff and help parents in effective, quality use of technology with their children of all ages, particularly preschoolers. I am linking you here to NAMLE and their 2019 conference website if this is something of interest to you. Thank you, as always, for sharing! Hi fellow YSCONers! I'm presenting with Space Science Institute/NASA at ALA on "Lessons Learned from the 2017 Eclipse." Part of my presentation will be on state library resources. Because every state is different, I was wondering if 2-3 folks could share any grant funding or training plans for 2019's "A Universe of Stories," or perhaps how they supported the 2017 Eclipse? I don't have much time so I just need a couple of examples to share... I can include your state logo on the slide if you'd like, too. Thanks! If LSTA funds go away, or if individual libraries casually flip from CSLP to iRead simply based on theme or cost, it behooves us to better examine the direct and indirect benefits of membership to groups and individuals. These issues also related to the Board's request for a more formal examination of how the manual is used and valued, which is a task yet-to-be taken on by this committee. I know I'm not the only one who has each library fill out a state-level summer reading report at the end of the summer (many states call theirs a "survey" rather than a report), and I think folks in the libraries are going to get confused. They already confuse what we do for them at the state level with CSLP, so if two things are floating around at the same time I can see them thinking they filled out my report when they actually filled out CSLP's survey. We have so many new folks now that I'm not sure they will be able to tell the difference. Idaho's report is due September 15. Not sure about when other states have their due dates. We ask for so many surveys and for us the public library survey required by the IMLS is also happening in July, it's a beast. In our case, many of the people doing the IMLS survey are also running summer reading programs and they are surveyed out, so I'd really like to make sure we ask them for data that will be utilized strategically and transparently. Our state hasn't always been good about this and we are trying to be more transparent and clear about how we're using the data we collect. Given that, I'd like to ask the following: Can we get a preview of survey questions? Can the statistics committee clarify what it means by "membership and product value"? From the description, it sounds like this is a survey for CSLP. In that case, can CSLP host the survey? We could send folks to the CSLP site instead of emailing a link. Additionally, a best practice in data collection is sharing the results. I would like the data to be shared with the group, not just if someone asks for it. However, this is just a heads up that in Missouri, our summer reading survey is already out and has been since May, so I won't be able to change or add any questions to it this year. To add to that survey in future, I'd need finalized questions by March, so that they can be tucked in before the final survey approvals. I can share the CSLP survey separately this year, but considering how many other grant reports and surveys are due to our office in late summer, there may be a low turnout in participation. I just wanted to throw that out there now, so it won't be a surprise. It's a challenge to get everyone to complete everything that is mandatory across that time, so things that are optional might be more of a struggle. That's my Norwegian ancestry response to these valid and thoughtful comments. As many of you have likely heard me say before, SLP data is onion with layers upon layers. So, something as simple as a survey is not as simple as a survey. The stats committee did a lot of thinking and talking about who/how/why regarding this survey. We had several conversations with folks outside of the committee and CSLP realms to shape our plans. Here's what I know: * Everyone has survey fatigue. EVERYONE. However, we really don't have a better tool for collecting responses from all corners of the country. This is also why our committee is planning on focus groups and other data collection methods in addition to the survey. * This survey-the CSLP survey about membership and materials-is not going to solve everything. There continue to be big conversations about SLP data through Measures that Matter, RIPL, state data coordinators, etc. This is just one piece. * No one has to do the survey. If it doesn't work for you or your state, then it doesn't work. * We will collect the cleanest and most consistent data if everyone uses the same link to the CSLP Survey Monkey. If people wanted to put the questions from the CSLP survey into their own state's survey, it's going to get messy. Also, we don't have it done yet, and many of you needed it months ago. We assumed it would be easiest for state reps/yscons to share the CSLP link as part of their state survey; e.g. "For the final question on Wisconsin's survey, please follow the link to complete a brief set of questions on the national/CSLP survey", OR alongside your state survey; e.g., "Below you will find the link to the Wisconsin survey and the national/CSLP survey. We request that you complete both", OR independent from your own state survey; e.g. "Hey Wisconsin librarians, I know you completed our survey last month, but I hope you might complete this national/CSLP survey this month." Again, nothing is perfect. If there was an obvious solution, I think we would have managed this years ago. * We are willing to open the survey for a longer period (July through October) if that helps. * We are planning for the survey to be short, no more than 10 questions. Some work-in-progress questions include: o Are you a CSLP member? (yes/no/unsure) o What is the most important part of a thematic SLP package? (slogan/manual/artwork/novelty/consistency/etc.) o Did you use the CSLP "Libraries Rock!" theme and/or artwork this year? (yes/no/unsure) o How do you value a shared summer reading program? (I like to do it myself; I love it!; Depends on the theme/artwork) * We will ABSOLUTELY share all the data with whoever wants it. I only said "upon request" because I am sensitive to the annoyance factor when people are inundated with stuff they don't want. For example, if your state doesn't participate in the national/CSLP survey and then there are 15+ messages about the survey results, etc., you might get super annoyed. That's why I was trying to keep it contained. By no means is it secretive! Again, this relates to the one survey link methodology-if we get all the data in one place from the get go, it will be MUCH easier to share. Ok, I *think*I covered it. I'm headed to ALA shortly followed by some vacation time, so if I miss some more responses, feel free to message me directly. Also, if you'll be in New Orleans, bend my ear in person. Just don't throw tomatoes. Thanks again for your passion and critical input. Joe said the Public Library Survey (PLS) data is always 2 years behind by the time they vet info, get it approved and make it public. The only required PLS questions are: C.5: Children's Programs C.6: Children's Program Attendance The rest on the attached sheet were added by us and can be changed/updated (I've only been here 2 years and have not done so yet). Also of note, Young Adults (13-18) have the same 2 PLS q's and then the "Adult" and "Family" programs are just counted under the "Total" category. So not very specific, at all. After thinking of today's chat, I think the best thing would be for us to come up with a few like questions that we can all "advise" our states to use, not that we can enforce it. Carrie Sanders from Maryland was kind enough to chat with me on the phone a couple weeks ago about how Maryland structures their summer reading committee. It's awesome and I'll let her chime in if she can. For Oregon, we are such a hodge podge of city libraries/county libraries/special library districts that there's not a clear way to get even representation, which is my sticking point at the moment. My current plan for an emerging summer reading committee is: to have one in person meeting in October focused just on summer reading data we collect, to make sure we have library representation before I change how/what summer reading data we collect. After that in-person meeting, I'll offer virtual meetings to get feedback, and then hopefully have a new and improved survey for Summer reading 2019 that better shares how we make an impact and also is more useful for our libraries to share with their local communities. I'd like to meet in October 2019 for summer reading on a different topic, and see if a summer reading committee can grow organically this way...Another barrier we have here is we don't have a deep bench - we only have 133 public libraries across the state, not all of them have youth services librarians, and many of the key youth services people are already serving on multiple committees for their city or county or the state library association. So I want to be inclusive and also respect their time, which is a tricky balance! If anyone has a state that is also a little nutty in terms of structure and size, I'd love to hear your approach to committee work or participation at the state library level. Thanks YSCON team! I also have a youth services advisory council, with whom I meet about three times a year, twice via Zoom and once face-to-face, on the same day that the Iowa Library Association sponsors Library Legislative Day in Des Moines (so that those who choose can attend the reception and mix and mingle with legislators). The advisory council's primary function is to help me to discern needed topics for continuing education, including those for breakout sessions for our biennial conference for youth services librarians in our public libraries, Kids First, and to help choose the four plenary session speakers for that conference. They also assist in choosing which of the proposals for those breakout sessions we'll include at the conference. The members are, as much as possible, representatives of both teen and children's librarians from the six geographically-based districts in Iowa--a challenge at times to find equal representation from three of the six districts that are sparsely populated, comprised mostly of small, rural, one-person libraries, and as far as four hours from Des Moines. Serving on the council also provides an opportunity for leadership development, that has provided a stepping stone for some members to involvement in other groups in the Iowa Library Association or ALA (one of our members also serves as Iowa's Councillor with ALA), and presenting break-out sessions at Kids First has resulted in some of our presenters going on to present at national conferences. Fostering professional development and cultivating library leaders have been among the most important facets of my work in my eight years as Iowa's youth services consultant, and the advisory council has served in both capacities. We?ve recently made some changes because attendance has been so low in some cases we were canceling just about every meeting. So this coming FY we?re going to go from 4 in-person meetings/year to one in-person in the fall, one virtual in the winter, and one in-person in the spring. We also dropped having a chair and secretary as usually Christi and I end up setting the agenda and running the meeting and taking notes anyway. We also decided to drop terms for now-everyone who was currently on that wanted to stay on is staying and we?re looking for 2 new members. We also talked about some ways for the members to be more active without stretching their time too much. One idea I love, that I think came from Michigan, is having the members present on something to do with summer programming for their webinar. Our group liked it too. Below is our official charge and extended charge which has not changed. In addition to what?s listed below we have a group Pinterest account (but I am probably the most active on it). The YS Advisory Committee charge: ? Assess ongoing needs in the areas of youth services ? Provide direct member input ? Evaluate and suggest programs and services In addition to the above charge, members of the YS Advisory Committee act as representatives of both their type of library and their location within the state to MLS. An understanding and participation in MLS events and mission are required for participation. Examples of recent projects include assisting with planning breakouts for our annual teen summit, creating our Resource Guide for New MLS Members and providing feedback on the summer library program. Committee members represent all areas of the state as well as both public and school libraries. I would like to add that I really struggled with trying to keep this group going -their absence said to me a lack of interest but when we were finally able to meet in person this spring that was not the case. And I do think it is extremely important to have a youth voice at the state level. They select the slate of educators/presenters for the SRP (I run an annual performers showcase and booking meeting, and my agency pays for each library to have one children?s and one teen performer) and provide input on what they need regarding tools, training, and support for SRP. It?s a seven member committee with a two year term that meets 3-4 times Sept. ? May. We also communicate often through email and Google docs. SRP isn?t the council?s sole focus as they also advise on continuing education and other timely issues, but SRP is a large piece of what they do. ******************* Danielle Margarida, Youth Services Coordinator Office of Library & Information Services Rhode Island Department of Administration One Capitol Hill | Providence, RI 02908-5803 Danielle.Margarida at olis.ri.gov 401.574.9309 (voice) | 401.574.9320 (fax) | www.olis.ri.gov [veclogo-2018] From: yscon [mailto:yscon-bounces at listsmart.osl.state.or.us] On Behalf Of Schott, Stephanie R Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2018 10:06 AM To: YS Consultants (yscon at listsmart.osl.state.or.us) Subject: [EXTERNAL] : [yscon] Summer Reading Committees Hi Everyone, I missed the monthly meeting yesterday, but just read over the notes. Even though we are a small state with 24 counties (=24 public library systems with 24 Youth Services Coordinators), having a smaller group formed to discuss major issues involving Summer Reading helps reduce the chatter and streamlines our discussions/decisions, etc. We call it our Summer Reading Advisory Council (SRAC). It is a fairly informal group and for the most part, ad hoc, where I gather them for work on an as-needed basis. There are two reps from each of our three regional libraries systems in MD: Eastern Shore Regional Library; Southern Maryland Regional Library, and Western Maryland Regional Library. The Directors of those three regional systems each appoint two reps to the SRAC from their library systems in their region. There is also a chunk of counties in central MD who do not fall into any of the regionals, and I hold a special meeting just for the YSC of those systems, where they nominate and choose two reps. They all then designate one of the reps on the SRAC to be their main facilitator, and I try to take a backseat role. Please see the attached summary of our SRAC that provides a bit more background and info. Hope this is helpful for you; happy to answer any questions you have. We are very clear that the chosen books should be diverse, though it is not written in any bylaws or criteria (I don't think). We're lucky to get enough people on the committees without adding more restrictions there, however. So the answer to that would be no. Message-ID: Hi all, I am not on our state committee as of right now, so I contacted a colleague who is to get see if there was anything in their guidelines. While there isn't anything about committee diversity they do have a statement on book selection: * We have no control over the books that are nominated, but we should consider diversity among our finalists. (Diversity in genre, race, religion, format, gender, etc.) One other interesting thing about the North Carolina Children's Book Awards is that all nominations are submitted by kids (could be with some help from their school or public librarian). The committee does read everything and narrow the nominations down to what they feel are the top 10 picture books and top 8 junior books. Hi everyone, For those of you who advise a book award committee, does your committee bylaws or manual have a diversity and inclusion statement in regards to the committee's makeup? Our book award committee's manual makes clear the criteria for book selection, but does not include a piece on the criteria for appointing committee members beyond having 3 school librarians, 3 public librarians, and 3 teachers who have experience working with children in grades 3-5. I'm looking to flesh this out a bit more so it is clear the committee should be comprised of librarians and teachers who can represent and draw from their experiences in a variety of communities. Thanks! There is no action required of you in this transition, we just wanted to keep you aware of what's happening. Things to know: *The new address will be yscon at lists.library.ohio.gov (not yet active at the time of this message) *The list software is the same, and the new list should behave about the same except for the change in list address. *All current subscribers (you!) will be automatically subscribed and will receive a message from the new list when it is up and running. *If anyone does NOT get at least one message from yscon at lists.library.ohio.gov by this Friday, June 29th, please e-mail the amazing Janet at jdwyer at library.ohio.gov and she will check to make sure you're subscribed. You should get a message from Janet tomorrow when the listserve is officially moved over, keep an eye out! And I want to add, having gotten a behind the scenes look at running a listserve, I really appreciate Ohio taking this on for all of us! It's great to be part of a group willing to work together and really share responsibilities.
