I'm in the same boat as Becky. Unless a draft was sent sooner - as I have not received responses yet to the annual SRP survey - I may not be able to make changes.

Still supportive of the CSLP mission and will do my best to help!

I do think this is an interesting idea.

However, this is just a heads up that in Missouri, our summer reading survey is already out and has been since May, so I won't be able to change or add any questions to it this year. To add to that survey in future, I'd need finalized questions by March, so that they can be tucked in before the final survey approvals.

I can share the CSLP survey separately this year, but considering how many other grant reports and surveys are due to our office in late summer, there may be a low turnout in participation. I just wanted to throw that out there now, so it won't be a surprise. It's a challenge to get everyone to complete everything that is mandatory across that time, so things that are optional might be more of a struggle.

Tessa & I messaged about this, as well. I plan to include them in my survey but she said they'll be more quantitative then qualitative so no need to worry about getting the questions out to libraries before the end of summer reading, as they won't have data to collect specifically.

I tend to send mine out by August.

What Jasmine says makes sense to me as well. However, my survey doesn't go out until AT LEAST the end of September. It surely would be easier to just add the CSLP questions to my survey and report them back as a compendium of results to CSLP...

Hi all,

What I am going to do is add the CSLP questions to my own survey. Yes, it will be a little longer this year but I do plan to let my libraries know that we are adding some questions on behalf of CSLP and it won't be like this every year. Tessa did mention that we could do this in her email.

Best,
Jasmine

Hi everybody,

I'd like to agree with Staci, everything she said is true for us in Oregon as well. We ask for so many surveys and for us the public library survey required by the IMLS is also happening in July, it's a beast. In our case, many of the people doing the IMLS survey are also running summer reading programs and they are surveyed out, so I'd really like to make sure we ask them for data that will be utilized strategically and transparently. Our state hasn't always been good about this and we are trying to be more transparent and clear about how we're using the data we collect.

Given that, I'd like to ask the following:

Can we get a preview of survey questions?

Can the statistics committee clarify what it means by "membership and product value"? From the description, it sounds like this is a survey for CSLP. In that case, can CSLP host the survey? We could send folks to the CSLP site instead of emailing a link.

Additionally, a best practice in data collection is sharing the results. I would like the data to be shared with the group, not just if someone asks for it.

Subject: Re: [yscon] Heads Up: End of Summer Survey about Use/Value of CSLP Materials and Membership

Hi, Tessa:
Is there any way the survey can be administered in the fall instead of end of summer? I know I'm not the only one who has each library fill out a state-level summer reading report at the end of the summer (many states call theirs a "survey" rather than a report), and I think folks in the libraries are going to get confused. They already confuse what we do for them at the state level with CSLP, so if two things are floating around at the same time I can see them thinking they filled out my report when they actually filled out CSLP's survey. We have so many new folks now that I'm not sure they will be able to tell the difference. Idaho's report is due September 15. Not sure about when other states have their due dates. Also thinking "survey fatigue."

Please know that I support the gathering of data from CSLP and see the benefits of collecting it; just hoping it could be sent out later...

*apologies for duplicate messages*

Dear State Youth Services Consultants and/or CSLP State* Reps,

The CSLP Statistics Committee wants to give you a heads up about a survey that will be issued at the end of Summer 2018.

Specifically:

  * The audience for the survey is public library staff who use (or elect not to use) CSLP materials through membership in CSLP; NOT state reps-we want input of people "in the field"
  * The survey will be conducted online; all we ask is for you to share the link and encourage library staff in your state to participate
  * The survey can be shared along with or separate from any existing end-of-summer surveys that you or your state conduct
  * Survey responses will be used, in addition to future focus group and other input solicitations, to inform recommendations from the CSLP Statistics Committee to the CSLP Board regarding membership and product value
  * Ideally, survey results will indicate state and national patterns. The committee will share state-specific data with yscon/state reps by request.

Wondering from where this initiative came? Please review the "Going Forward" section of our committee's report at the CSLP Annual Meeting in April 2018, below my signature.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

Statistics Committee Report
CSLP Annual Meeting 2018

>From the final section:

Going Forward
Statistics and summer library programs are complicated, and this committee is diligently making slow and steady progress. From our work this past year, we see all of these pieces feeding into a larger and critical conversation about the membership structure and costs. If LSTA funds go away, or if individual libraries casually flip from CSLP to iRead simply based on theme or cost, it behooves us to better examine the direct and indirect benefits of membership to groups and individuals. These issues also related to the Board's request for a more formal examination of how the manual is used and valued, which is a task yet-to-be taken on by this committee. Our committee is currently considering if it is time to develop, or redevelop, a formal "how do you use CSLP" survey?
