[yscon] Summer Reading Committees

Hi everybody,

I'm on a similar fact-finding mission about summer reading committees! Carrie Sanders from Maryland was kind enough to chat with me on the phone a couple weeks ago about how Maryland structures their summer reading committee. It's awesome and I'll let her chime in if she can.

For Oregon, we are such a hodge podge of city libraries/county libraries/special library districts that there's not a clear way to get even representation, which is my sticking point at the moment. My current plan for an emerging summer reading committee is: to have one in person meeting in October focused just on summer reading data we collect, to make sure we have library representation before I change how/what summer reading data we collect. After that in-person meeting, I'll offer virtual meetings to get feedback, and then hopefully have a new and improved survey for Summer reading 2019 that better shares how we make an impact and also is more useful for our libraries to share with their local communities. I'd like to meet in October 2019 for summer reading on a different topic, and see if a summer reading committee can grow organically this way...Another barrier we have here is we don't have a deep bench - we only have 133 public libraries across the state, not all of them have youth services librarians, and many of the key youth services people are already serving on multiple committees for their city or county or the state library association. So I want to be inclusive and also respect their time, which is a tricky balance!

If anyone has a state that is also a little nutty in terms of structure and size, I'd love to hear your approach to committee work or participation at the state library level.

Thanks YSCON team!

I snagged it from the reminder (Google link at bottom):

The topic will be Summer Library Programs. I have started the agenda/notes page, so please feel free to begin adding topics, questions, resources, and links at any time: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fOPKkqvYMwuoKd4Vqasp6p33b95HGWXT5yB-oCWUUJQ/edit

Oh dear, I missed the meeting as well. I guess I was busy adding important upcoming dates to my calendar and didn't look at June! I haven't seen the notes. Where should I be looking?

North Carolina doesn't have a summer reading committee, but I'm interested to see what the responses are. Maybe we need to have one :)

Subject: [yscon] Summer Reading Committees

Hi Everyone,

I missed the monthly meeting yesterday, but just read over the notes. It seems like a lot of you hold trainings, but I am curious to learn more about statewide Summer Reading Committees. Hoping to have something up and running for next year. I have reached out to a few people about this topics but have not received anything back - probably because they're busy with last minute summer maneuvering!

I have some thoughts on what I want to create, but still have some questions for those of you who have a statewide Summer Reading Committee:

  1. Is your committee a partnership with your state association?
  2. What is the mission or work of the group?
  3. How many people are on the committee?
  4. How often do you meet?

Thanks for your help,
