Hi Stephanie,

Apologies for the delay in responding to your inquiry about summer reading
committees.

Even though we are a small state with 24 counties (=24 public library
systems with 24 Youth Services Coordinators), having a smaller group formed
to discuss major issues involving Summer Reading helps reduce the chatter
and streamlines our discussions/decisions, etc. We call it our Summer
Reading Advisory Council (SRAC).

It is a fairly informal group and for the most part, ad hoc, where I gather
them for work on an as-needed basis. There are two reps from each of our
three regional libraries systems in MD:  Eastern Shore Regional Library;
Southern Maryland Regional Library, and Western Maryland Regional Library.
The Directors of those three regional systems each appoint two reps to the
SRAC from their library systems in their region.

There is also a chunk of counties in central MD who do not fall into any of
the regionals, and I hold a special meeting just for the YSC of those
systems, where they nominate and choose two reps. They all then designate
one of the reps on the SRAC to be their main facilitator, and I try to take
a backseat role.

Please see the attached summary of our SRAC that provides a bit more
background and info. Hope this is helpful for you; happy to answer any
questions you have.

Carrie :)
