You can read about the program here [https://thedoddcenter.uconn.edu/k-12-education/childrens-literature-and-human-rights/], and if you scroll to the bottom, there are 6 catetogories for which they have chosen books and created posters. What I have learned is that many other countries (specifically Britain and Scotland, at least) have Human Rights Education in their curricula ? and in the United States, we have no requirement for this. There are two doctoral students studying what is being done in the US, and developing professional development for teachers and media specialists around teaching human rights education with children?s books. They have sent out a nationwide survey, but have questioned how far their reach has gone. We are sunsetting our e-mail listserve services shortly, at the end of June 2018. Our librarian who manages the lists has put together a few listserve options that have potential. Is there another state who is able to host and or take on this listserve? As a newbie, I know Oregon didn't always host, and I'm not sure if there are any rules about the listserve, if someone can share with us the context of how long it's been around, that would be helpful for us new folks! Please chime in and let us know if you'd like this listserve to keep going and if your state is willing to host! I'm not sure of a good process/way to make this decision and move forward, if anyone has ideas about that, please share as well. Thanks! My answers are below. I also have more questions for the group about this - There are currently 67 subscribers to the yscon list. They can unsubscribe themselves so I'm assuming everyone who's on the list is someone who wants to be there. I don't know that new state folks know this list is available to them/is a resource, I think this listserve may need some care and feeding by whoever takes it over to make sure everyone who should be able to access can access it, and then a periodic check in about new folks may be helpful. This could require checking in with other people at each state to see who does youth services stuff and ensuring they're on the list. Does this seem accurate to others? *Volume/traffic - how many postings in an average month? A month-by-month message count for the past year would be helpful. April 2018: 49 posts March 2018: 36 posts February 2018: 46 posts January 2018: 86 posts December 2017: 41 posts November 2017: 23 posts October 2017: 59 posts September 2017: 28 posts August 2017: 63 posts July 2017: 23 posts June 2017: 54 posts May 2017: 34 posts *Message size - is the listserv expected to accommodate large attachments? Nope! We have a bounce function that won't accept messages with attachments beyond a certain size. Mostly people insert links to websites and don't attach large files. Archive - do you maintain a listserv archive? Would you want to transfer it to the next host site? We do maintain an archive, I can see it and access it, I'm not sure about who else can see it right now but I can ask our librarian running listserves. I don't know if it should be public or not? *Number of subscribers, and would you be able to send us a list of subscribers' email addresses so we can populate the new list without everyone having to individually subscribe? There are currently 67 subscribers. And yes, we could send an excel spreadsheet. Would you want to transfer it to the next host site? *Number of subscribers, and would you be able to send us a list of subscribers' email addresses so we can populate the new list without everyone having to individually subscribe? Let me know your questions for is as well! Best, Janet ________________________________ From: yscon > on behalf of Greta Bergquist > Sent: Tuesday, May 8, 2018 7:01:33 PM To: YSCON (yscon at listsmart.osl.state.or.us) Subject: [yscon] yscon listserve Hello everybody, I mentioned at the CSLP meeting last month that Oregon is phasing out of the listserve business. Thanks! I really appreciate your willingness to take it on. I can explain a bit about how people get added to the listserve. Over the years Karen Day has contacted me whenever there's a new CSLP State Rep and I've passed their information along to whoever is administering the YSCon listserve at the moment. I think that was because I'm still the convener for the YSCon ASCLA interest group that meets during ALA conferences. I know there are many people that should be included on this listserve that aren't CSLP State Reps so this is a great opportunity to add anyone who hasn't been on it that should be included. ~Sharon Best regards, Sharon Rawlins, MLS Youth Services Specialist for Lifelong Learning NJ State Library 185 West State St. P.O. We felt that it was important to have a good way for all the state youth services consultants to communicate with each other, whether they could afford to be ALA members or not. Therefore, we looked for other options. (Renegades that we are...) I don't remember who the youth consultant was in North Carolina at that point but they volunteered the services of the State Library of North Carolina to host. (It may have been Cal Shepherd.) Very interesting and informative. I knew that ASCLA has a youth services consultants' group (I'm a member, I'm pretty sure!) but I didn't know the whole history of our mailing list. I'd suggested to Greta that I might appeal to COSLA to send a periodic (perhaps semi-annual) message to the State Librarians asking that any new youth services-related SLA staff contact info be sent to me. Then I'd email those folks to invite them to the YSCON list and introduce them to our various activities as a group (monthly online meetings, meeting at CSLP, official meeting at ALA conferences, general support and camaraderie). Anyway, North Carolina hosted the listserv until Oregon took over a few years ago. I don't know if ALA even knows that this listserv functions outside of ALA's oversight. Go, Janet! Just a little history of this listserv... I don't remember exactly when it was started, but at least 20+ years ago. Initially, it was supposed to be part of ALA's listservs. That meant that one had to be a member of ALA and ASCLA to gain access. We felt that it was important to have a good way for all the state youth services consultants to communicate with each other, whether they could afford to be ALA members or not. Therefore, we looked for other options. (Renegades that we are...) If that isn't enough - please review the attached documents. We wish you good luck in breaking down barriers for rural library staff to attend professional development. If you have additional questions please contact Jaime Ball jball at azlibrary.gov or Dale Savage dsavage at azlibrary.gov. GO Train Project Summary When did GO Train start? In 2015, Arizona State Library Development Branch staff Jaime Ball and Dale Savage submitted an LSTA grant and received funding to begin GO Train as a pilot project. Libraries in rural counties were given the opportunity to participate in the pilot project based on an assessment survey of training needs and interests and ability to get away for training. Training checklists for substitute staff were developed and approved by Library Development Branch. Which counties are participating? In 2016, face to face meetings were held with directors and managers of pilot libraries to share project details, review the application and training checklists, and respond to questions. Libraries in Cochise, Greenlee, LaPaz, and Navajo counties joined the GO Train project. Consultant Bonny Bruce worked with library managers and Randstad temporary personnel agency to facilitate recruitment, hiring, and training of substitute staff for their library locations. Has GO Train been successful? Yes! From April, 2016 to April 2018, libraries participating in GO Train used 388 substitute hours. Library Development staff offered training workshops that correspond to needs identified in the survey of pilot library staff. Library manages and staff had the opportunity to attend conferences, in person and online trainings, and Library Institute. Apr 2016 through Sep 2016 92 hours Oct 2016 through Sep 2017 181 hours Oct 2017 through Apr 2018 115 hours Application to Participate in GO Train What is GO Train? GO Train is a substitute personnel program designed to help Arizona library staff attend continuing education opportunities including face to face workshops, training, and conferences, and approved online training courses. How Does It Work? Participating libraries will be eligible for substitute employees to provide coverage for staff interested in continuing education. Substitute staff will be employees of and receive payment from a temporary personnel agency on contract with Arizona State Library. The Arizona State Library will: * Provide funding to pay for substitute staff training and salaries. * Provide scholarship funds for library staff to offset training costs. * Provide hotel and mileage reimbursement for working substitutes. * Meet with library staff in person to share project structure and respond to questions. * Provide checklists of training essentials. * Provide funding to advertise substitute positions if needed. * Provide interview questions for applicants. * Conduct a survey evaluating the effectiveness of the pilot project, recruitment and training of substitute staff, the impact of pilot project on training attendance, and the temporary agency payment model. Participating Libraries will: * Identify people in the library's geographic area or community that are suitable candidates for substitute staff. Criteria for suitability include familiarity with libraries, computer literacy, and desire to help people. * Conduct interviews at their local library and recommend qualified candidates. * Tailor training checklist provided by Arizona State Library to the local library and train substitutes at their locations. * Complete a brief survey to evaluate the effectiveness of the pilot project in September 2018. As part of our LSTA Continuing Education grants, libraries can apply for a substitute to cover the library while they attend training - "Funding for a substitute to replace a staff member attending a training event so that the library can remain open to the public during their absence." As I mentioned on the document, we have had few people take advantage of this over the years - to the point that we really don't take it into consideration when allocating funds. Both myself and the LSTA coordinator are fairly new in our positions so we don't know the history of it, and we don't know why it hasn't been used. We haven't promoted the availability of it at all, but it wasn't used in the years before we started either. We are intrigued by Arizona's model and will be interested to see what they think at the end of the pilot program. We still think it's a need in our state, and if that's true, we obviously need to do something differently. I'm certain that you have friends and colleagues who would be interested in learning more about the 6th Annual Summer Institute in Digital Literacy, the premier professional development program that offers a hands-on, minds-on learning experience like no other. Won't you please forward this email to someone you think might benefit from participating in the program? PROGRAM: Summer Institute in Digital Literacy 2018 DATE: July 15 - 20, 2018 LOCATION: University of Rhode Island, Providence, Rhode Island USA LEARN MORE: https://digiURI.com We approach the practice of digital literacy in a unique way. We see it not primarily as a form of technology integration, but as an expanded conceptualization of literacy. This summer, we're emphasizing (1) creative expression as part of teaching and learning (2) inquiry and critical analysis, (3) storytelling and social justice, (4) digital authorship and (5) informal leadership. Participants will learn to use a variety of digital platforms, tools and technologies by exploring and creating messages using many different forms of digital media. They have time to develop plans they can implement, informed by rich discussions with K-12 educators, college faculty, librarians, researchers and media professionals. This summer, our keynote address is offered by the legendary African-American storyteller Len Cabral and his daughter, the media literacy activist Nuala Cabral. In their talk, "Before There Were Screens, There Were Stories," they will reflect on the experiences of tellers and listeners in a fast-evolving media landscape where screens are ubiquitous, attention spans are short, multi-tasking is the norm and human connection is at our fingertips, yet fleeting. Understanding digital and media literacy through intergenerational knowledge sharing, global perspectives on social justice, and activism through youth media will be thought-provoking for all participants. Thanks for sharing this information about the Summer Institute in Digital Literacy to someone who's interested in giving themselves the gift of learning this summer. We also ask the host library to pull a cart of books, which they've all been happy to do. AND, we got a small LSTA grant of about $1000 to create our "Ohio Ready to Read Trainers Kit" - a core collection of books and materials, and 2 suitcases to tote them around in. Here are some photos: www.dropbox.com/sh/e7g5xlf71jwkpvh/AACLeWxItEyG3-6J_pKIlLVba?dl=0 The books and materials in the trainers kit are keyed to the talking points of our workshop, which is an amalgam of ECRR2 and ECRR1 concepts plus a lot of practical advice and hands-on activities re. storytime practice, patron interactions, print communications/displays, etc. All the books - those the attendees bring, those the library provides, and those in our kit, are available and used by attendees throughout the workshop. As Krista and Sharon noted, books get mixed and mingled. So far, we've never had any book go missing forever. The kit books are labeled, and nearly all attendees bring book from their library collections, so all are identifiable and returnable. This year, I stopped asking for registration and completion numbers, because an increasing number of libraries no longer use traditional registration or completion methods. It's been apple-orange salad to try to make a statement about SRP completion rates statewide. Instead, I'm just asking for the number of individuals (by age group) who participated in SLP/SRP (by the library's definition of participation), and the head count at SLP/SRP-related programs. Also, I'm no longer asking if libraries used the CSLP theme. I continue to solicit their ratings and comments on CSLP services and products ("Did not use" is a choice in the ratings question). Looking forward to other responses! I've worked hard to streamline it and have goals of eventually turning it into a report and toolkit that can be downloaded and used for advocacy efforts at the local level. It's definitely not unwieldy, as I'm up to 28 questions myself. (Not all of the questions will be required though). We pay for each library to have one children's performer and one teen performer (paid with LSTA funds), so I have to include a bunch of questions regarding attendance at these programs. I've added questions about school partnerships this year because I've had a lot of questions recently from our Dept. of Ed. and the Governor's Office regarding school/public library SRP collaboration. I also added a few more questions about CSLP materials so I can offer better input when it comes to proposed manual changes. ******************* Danielle Margarida, Youth Services Coordinator Office of Library & Information Services Rhode Island Department of Administration One Capitol Hill | Providence, RI 02908-5803 401.574.9309 (voice) | 401.574.9320 (fax) | www.olis.ri.gov [veclogo-2018] From: yscon [mailto:yscon-bounces at listsmart.osl.state.or.us] On Behalf Of Greta Bergquist Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2018 3:29 PM To: YSCON (yscon at listsmart.osl.state.or.us) Subject: [EXTERNAL] : [yscon] Summer Statistics Survey Question Hello summer reading friends, I know that Connecticut shared their summer reading stats survey a while ago (thanks Linda!), and I'm wondering if anyone else has one they'd share with the group? I did not give the libraries an option when I switched from paper copies. This fall will be our 3rd year of providing only USBs. Since I was really straightforward with the libraries about the costs and challenges of shipping the paper manuals, versus the USBs, almost everyone understood and transitioned to this format with no issues. We only had one grumbler out of approximately 417 locations. She complained about how she needed to see the manual in print. I told her that I would be happy to print the items on the USB drive for her and send them out by courier. She said she had her own printer, so she guessed she'd just print what she wanted herself (which was our intention and preference anyway). That was the extent of the drama, which I thought was good, as we tend to hear from the libraries if they aren't happy with a change we've made. We considered moving to online access when multiple formats became an option, but it initially wasn't clear if every library would have to have their own username and password and how much of a headache it would be for us to set that up and/or potentially have to police it every time staff rolled over and people lost or forgot their usernames or passwords. It seems like the online access didn't end up being complicated at all, but since we already switched to USB (which I believe is the same cost)and people are doing well with that format, I think it's unlikely we would switch again. Also, in the case of poor internet access or speed, it should be easier for libraries to pull materials off a USB drive than have to download them. Each system may choose only 1 format. I offered mix-n-match one year (the first year CSLP had USB format) and it was a nightmare. I'm a notoriously accommodating person, but that experience forced me to set some limits. The librarians know that USB (and DVD) come with the online access code, and most seem to like having both. Last year I ordered: 107 online only 644 USB 39 DVD 6 paper: 2 for the State Library collection - we catalog them with the state documents - and one each for our regional library systems. Our survey is currently open for librarians to request format changes, contact person updates, and (new this year) opting out of the paper Demco catalog. It looks like this: www.surveymonkey.com/r/cslp2019_preferences The number of libraries continuing to want DVD format surprises me. Are their computers so old as to not have USB ports? Ugh. Our computers are a couple years old and don't have DVD drives. As Krista and Sharon noted, books get mixed and mingled. So far, we've never had any book go missing forever. The kit books are labeled, and nearly all attendees bring book from their library collections, so all are identifiable and returnable. As a backup, I usually check out a set of texts from my home library, but only pack them and bring them out as a last result, if the host library can't get all the copies. I've never had a trouble or kick back on this. My only (very minor) issue is that even Saroj will still bring all her own sets, and sometimes will pack up the library's copies; it's usually sorted out by the end. :) Hope this helps, ~Krista Krista King-Oaks Youth Services Consultant Library Development Branch Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives 300 Coffee Tree Road Frankfort, KY 40601 (502) 564-1739 krista.king-oaks at ky.gov KDLA supports School Ready Libraries [twitter][facebook] Services provided by the Library Development Branch of KDLA are funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. I have a question about how other state libraries handle the need for books for large trainings. Do you request them all from a nearby public library? Do you have a large core collection of youth materials? For example, in December we hosted Saroj Ghoting for regional Every Child Ready to Read workshops and needed a large variety of children's books for attendees to use. Putting these on hold with a public library has created some issues and so I am trying to find out what y'all do? Thanks in advance for the help! [Refrain: I'm not sure how it was done in the past...] Last year I wasn't here to order the manuals and so bless Karen Day's heart, she set aside 400 USBs for our libraries. For simplicity's sake, I ordered the exact same thing this year. For the future I will think about letting libraries choose their format, and having a default if I don't hear from them. Only library voiced any dislike for the USB this year, so I feel that's a win overall! Any thoughts? Thanks!
