[yscon] yscon listserve

Hi everyone,

Janet asked some great questions about the listserve and I think they're worth sharing if your state is thinking of hosting! My answers are below. I also have more questions for the group about this - There are currently 67 subscribers to the yscon list. They can unsubscribe themselves so I'm assuming everyone who's on the list is someone who wants to be there.

I don't know that new state folks know this list is available to them/is a resource, I think this listserve may need some care and feeding by whoever takes it over to make sure everyone who should be able to access can access it, and then a periodic check in about new folks may be helpful. This could require checking in with other people at each state to see who does youth services stuff and ensuring they're on the list. Does this seem accurate to others?

*Volume/traffic - how many postings in an average month? A month-by-month message count for the past year would be helpful.
            April 2018: 49 posts
            March 2018: 36 posts
            February 2018: 46 posts
            January 2018: 86 posts
            December 2017: 41 posts
            November 2017: 23 posts
            October 2017: 59 posts
            September 2017: 28 posts
            August 2017: 63 posts
            July 2017: 23 posts
            June 2017: 54 posts
            May 2017: 34 posts

*Message size - is the listserv expected to accommodate large attachments? Nope! We have a bounce function that won't accept messages with attachments beyond a certain size. Mostly people insert links to websites and don't attach large files.

Archive - do you maintain a listserv archive? Would you want to transfer it to the next host site? We do maintain an archive, I can see it and access it, I'm not sure about who else can see it right now but I can ask our librarian running listserves. I don't know if it should be public or not?

*Number of subscribers, and would you be able to send us a list of subscribers' email addresses so we can populate the new list without everyone having to individually subscribe? There are currently 67 subscribers. And yes, we could send an excel spreadsheet.

Hi Greta,

The State Library of Ohio may be able to take over hosting a listserv for YSCON. We maintain several listservs for Ohio librarians using GNU Mailman software. It would not be difficult to add and manage one for YSCON.

Our IT department has several questions I hope you can answer or refer before they commit:

*Volume/traffic - how many postings in an average month? A month-by-month message count for the past year would be helpful.

*Message size - is the listserv expected to accommodate large attachments?

*Archive - do you maintain a listserv archive? Would you want to transfer it to the next host site?

*Number of subscribers, and would you be able to send us a list of subscribers' email addresses so we can populate the new list without everyone having to individually subscribe?

Let me know your questions for is as well!

Best,
Janet

Subject: [yscon] yscon listserve

Hello everybody,

I mentioned at the CSLP meeting last month that Oregon is phasing out of the listserve business. We are sunsetting our e-mail listserve services shortly, at the end of June 2018. Our librarian who manages the lists has put together a few listserve options<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flibguides.osl.state.or.us%2Flists%2Fissues&data=02%7C01%7Cjdwyer%40library.ohio.gov%7C2d24a35206014453bf2508d5b537a7ef%7C50f8fcc494d84f0784eb36ed57c7c8a2%7C0%7C1%7C636614173016265410&sdata=%2B86nc%2BoqzSj0JNHDW3OAn4CyqOeJByIfOOOVgYeR%2FYA%3D&reserved=0> that have potential.

Is there another state who is able to host and or take on this listserve? As a newbie, I know Oregon didn't always host, and I'm not sure if there are any rules about the listserve, if someone can share with us the context of how long it's been around, that would be helpful for us new folks!

Please chime in and let us know if you'd like this listserve to keep going and if your state is willing to host! I'm not sure of a good process/way to make this decision and move forward, if anyone has ideas about that, please share as well.

Thanks!

Greta B
