[yscon] books for training?

Hi all!

I do not believe that such a collection has existed at SLNC. We are beginning to develop a professional collection but I think we might stick to more professional development materials.

When we have hosted Saroj for training in the past, we did similar things to others - everyone brings a few of their own books, Saroj brings her pile, and I usually have a few extra gleaned from my local library.

Best,
Jasmine

Hi Rebecca and friends,

Ohio Ready to Read trainers ask that every attendee bring 2-3 favorite picture books to our Early Literacy 101 workshops (www.ohreadytoread.org/early-literacy-101<http://www.ohreadytoread.org/early-literacy-101>).

We also ask the host library to pull a cart of books, which they've all been happy to do.

AND, we got a small LSTA grant of about $1000 to create our "Ohio Ready to Read Trainers Kit" - a core collection of books and materials, and 2 suitcases to tote them around in. Here are some photos:
www.dropbox.com/sh/e7g5xlf71jwkpvh/AACLeWxItEyG3-6J_pKIlLVba?dl=0<http://www.dropbox.com/sh/e7g5xlf71jwkpvh/AACLeWxItEyG3-6J_pKIlLVba?dl=0>

The books and materials in the trainers kit are keyed to the talking points of our workshop, which is an amalgam of ECRR2 and ECRR1 concepts plus a lot of practical advice and hands-on activities re. storytime practice, patron interactions, print communications/displays, etc.

All the books - those the attendees bring, those the library provides, and those in our kit, are available and used by attendees throughout the workshop. As Krista and Sharon noted, books get mixed and mingled. So far, we've never had any book go missing forever. The kit books are labeled, and nearly all attendees bring book from their library collections, so all are identifiable and returnable.

Best,
Janet

Hi Rebecca & All,

We do not have a core collection of children's materials at the state library. Instead, whenever we hosted Saroj, I usually share the book list with the youth services librarian at each host library and they have taken responsibility for checking out the materials from their system as needed. As a backup, I usually check out a set of texts from my home library, but only pack them and bring them out as a last result, if the host library can't get all the copies. I've never had a trouble or kick back on this.

My only (very minor) issue is that even Saroj will still bring all her own sets, and sometimes will pack up the library's copies; it's usually sorted out by the end. :)

Hope this helps,
~Krista

Subject: [yscon] books for training?

Hello!

I have a question about how other state libraries handle the need for books for large trainings. Do you request them all from a nearby public library? Do you have a large core collection of youth materials?
For example, in December we hosted Saroj Ghoting for regional Every Child Ready to Read workshops and needed a large variety of children's books for attendees to use. Putting these on hold with a public library has created some issues and so I am trying to find out what y'all do?

Thanks in advance for the help!
Rebecca
