Hello networkers,
I'm writing to encourage you to support this important activity of the
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Our local Northwest Chapter
is hosting the walk in Portland - it is the only walk event in the
Northwest.
Why is this important? Two reasons:
First money raised goes directly to research that is sorely needed and
to primary prevention. AFSP is the only organization that is raising
funds for developing the research base that is needed to prevent
suicide, and over 85% of funds raised go directly to research projects -
that is very low overhead cost.
Second, half of the money that is raised will stay here in the
Northwest to promote suicide prevention in a number of ways. These
include:
Bereavement support, Public education, Survivor conferences,
Intervention skills training and other projects that the AFSPNW board
members are eager to support. All of the work implemented through AFSPNW
is done by volunteers - there is no indirect or overhead cost.
I'll have a walk team at the event and you are quite welcome to join
me. Ron Bloodworth, David Westbrook and Donna Noonan - folks that you
all probably know will be there too along with other board members of
AFSPNW.
Please feel free to send me an email with any questions you might have
about how to participate in the walk and how to donate funds for the
walk. You can go to the AFSP website and click on out of the darkness
