The Journal of the American Medical Assoc. (JAMA) just published an
article titled, "Suicide Prevention Strategies; A Systematic Review."
The paper's objectives were "To examine evidence for the effectiveness
of specific suicide-preventive interventions and to make recommendations
for future prevention programs and research."
 
Their conclusions are that educating physicians to recognize and treat
depression and restricting access to lethal means reduce suicide rates.
Other interventions need more study to show efficacy. 
 
They've reviewed the literature for efficacy of many strategies for
suicide prevention including awareness and education, screening,
treatment interventions, means restriction, and the media.
