[YSPNetwork] Oregon Suicide Prevention Training

Dear YSPNetworkers,  Please consider taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity! The Youth Suicide Prevention Program is bringing 2 national trainers from the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) to Oregon on August 15 * 16 to deliver a training on Youth Suicide Core Competencies to local teams.  “Why public health?” is a question we get asked about our leading suicide prevention efforts in the state. This training will answer that question. The training offers you a way to build common  knowledge and skills around preventing youth suicide and a means to create or enhance working partnerships on the issue. The training is offered for free as part of the Healthy Kids Learn Better (HKLB) Summer Institute at Southern Oregon University in Ashland from 8-4 on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 15 and 16. Inexpensive lodging is available in air-conditioned SOU dormitories, plus there are special rates in Ashland hotels. Staying in nearby Medford is another option (and less expensive than Ashland). (The HKLB Summer Institute was in LaGrande last year.) Ideally, you will come with a team of 5-8 people, comprised of partners in public health, mental health, schools (administrators, counselors &/or health teachers), juvenile justice, law enforcement, hospitals, alcohol and drug prevention, community advocates (including coalition members &/or survivors), and/or other interested parties.  The goal of this training is "to build a set of core competencies for enacting and implementing suicide prevention efforts in a state or community, with the added benefit of forging a stronger coalition within that state/community. It puts everyone in the room on the same page, and gives the group a common ground from which to move forward their efforts." It also will enable team members to share leadership so that responsibility doesn't fall on just one person. Registration is online at www.ode.state.or.us/new/events.
