Healthy Kids Learn Better Grant Opportunities

Healthy Kids Learn Better (HKLB) is a partnership comprised of the
Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Department of Human
Services. HKLB is pleased to announce three grant opportunities for
2007-08. All three areas of focus use the Coordinated School Health
model and are based on evidence that students who are healthy can
achieve better academically. The grant institutes are designed to
develop the capacity of faculty, staff, and the community to assess,
plan, and implement actions to promote the health and well-being of
faculty, staff, and students. Listed below are the three grant
opportunities and the request for applications for the 2007-08 academic
year.

***Mental Health Grant ***
Schools can apply to be one of 4 demonstration project sites using a
Coordinated School Health Approach to address mental and emotional
health needs. The goal of this project is to improve access for children
and youth to a full continuum of mental health services and create
environments that promote optimal social and emotional development on
school campuses. The selected schools will participate in a series of
learning institutes, will pilot-test new tools, and will receive
tailored technical assistance to assess campus mental health needs and
develop an action plan to address a priority mental health issue. For
more information, please contact Isabelle Barbour, Adolescent Health
Section, DHS at 971-673-0376 or isabelle.s.barbour at state.or.us

***Physical Activity, Nutrition and Tobacco Prevention Grant ***
This opportunity focuses on physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco
prevention in schools. The selected schools will participate in a series
of learning institutes, will use a variety of assessment tools, and will
receive tailored technical assistance to assess school physical
activity, nutrition and tobacco prevention needs and develop an action
plan to address these issues. For more information please contact Gary
English, Team Leader for HKLB at ODE, at (503) 947-5726 or

***Asthma Friendly Schools Grant ***
Asthma is among the leading causes of school absenteeism. The Asthma
Friendly School program is designed to assist schools in developing long
term solutions to reduce environmental triggers, develop support for
students with asthma, and encourage full participation in physical
activity for students with asthma. For more information, contact Jim
Terhune, Asthma Friendly Schools specialist, ODE at (503) 947-5782 or
