Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Programs
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
today announced the award of 18 grants totaling almost $27 million over
three years to support state suicide prevention efforts. The Garrett
Lee Smith Memorial Act provides authorization and funding for grants
combating youth suicide.
Over the past few months, SAMHSA has announced awards for 30 programs,
12 of which fund suicide prevention efforts from tribes/tribal
organizations. These tribes/tribal organizations will receive over $16
million in grants over the next three years.
*Each year, more children and young adults die from suicide than from
cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, and chronic lung
diseases combined,* said SAMHSA Acting Administrator Eric Broderick,
D.D.S., M.P.H. *These new grants will help states build on and
strengthen established youth suicide prevention and early intervention
strategies.*
The 18 awards to states are funded up to $500,000 per year in total
costs. Continuation awards are subject to the availability of funds and
progress achieved by awardees. The grants announced today will be
