Dear YSPNetworkers,
I'm forwarding a message announcing 2 webinars next week that you might
want to join:

SPRC would like to let you know about two webinar events happening next
week:

Suicide Prevention and the Role of the Social Determinants of Health
Thursday, June 25th, 2009
2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time
Sponsor: SAMHSA*s Resource Center to Promote Acceptance, Dignity, and
Social Inclusion Associated with Mental Health
To register:
http://www.promoteacceptance.samhsa.gov/teleconferences/registration/default.aspx
(Please note: Registration for this teleconference will close at 5:00
p.m., Eastern Time, on Friday, June 19, 2009)

Social determinants (e.g. lower economic status, poverty, substandard
housing, unemployment, and poor nutrition) can lead to anxiety,
insecurity, low self-esteem, social isolation and a range of health and
mental health disorders. Economic turmoil (e.g., increased unemployment,
foreclosures, loss of investments and other financial distress) can
impact both physical and mental health. Unemployment and other kinds of
economic distress do not "cause" suicide directly, but they can be
factors that interact dynamically within individuals and affect their
risk for suicide. Speakers include Anara Guard (SPRC), and Heidi Bryan
(Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Council).

QUESTIONS: Contact a SAMHSA ADS Center representative at 1-800-540-0320
or promoteacceptance at samhsa.hhs.gov.

Protective Factors: Boosting Resiliency in Youths
Thursday, June 25th, 2009
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Sponsor: Wyoming Department of Health
To register: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/415687075
Protecting youths from suicide means not only recognizing those at risk
and intervening to prevent self-harm. It also means promoting positive
behaviors that can reduce the likelihood that a vulnerable child will
become suicidal. What evidence-based programs boost protective factors,
the social and personal resources that can enhance resiliency and guard
against suicide? In this webinar, we*ll explore promotion of positive
mental health and social/emotional wellbeing, intervening early,
empowerment, and focusing on all youths to reduce shame and blame.
Speakers include Bonnie L. Benard (trainer and author on prevention and
youth resilience) and Teresa LaFromboise, Ph.D. (Stanford University)

QUESTIONS: Contact webinar coordinator Hannah-Mae Wick at:
