10-10-10 Initiative

For many, many years Alaska has been listed as one of the top five for
completed suicides across the United States. When clusters of suicides
happen in Alaska, it draws attention to the Alaska Native population.
When ANTHC first started talking about suicide, we first asked for the
blessing of the Elders that represented each region, one elder said,
"One suicide was too much."

Traveling throughout Alaska, the stigma of even talking about suicide
is still strong. We want them to know they are not alone and by
sharing what is happening in other communities might give them the
comfort they need to take action for the good of their people.

October 10, 2010 (10-10-10) will be the week that Alaska will take an
aggressive approach by having ten (10) suicide prevention workshops
during that week. The workshops could be the ASIST (Applied Suicide
Intervention Skills Training); safeTALK, suicideTALK, or the
Gatekeeper model, as long as there are ten workshops total.

This is a challenge we have to take, we need to ensure people they are
not alone and we're doing all we can to help address the high rates of
suicide in Alaska.

With approval, a list of the participating communities will be sent to
the media should they want to be a part of the change that is taking
place in Alaska.
