Many of you are familiar with the QPR gatekeeper program. Beginning this September, QPR will be offering an "Online Suicide Intervention Specialist (or OSIS) program primarily targeting professionals who provide crisis and counseling services. Please see below for a detailed description of the program or the shorter attached news release regarding the program. The brief demo suggests that Dr. Quinnett has another valuable training tool here.
Regards,
Tanya

The world has moved online, and so have suicidal people!
To: Friends, colleagues and associates of the QPR Institute
Topic: QPR and iCarol release online live chat service, training and certification
From: Paul Quinnett, Ph.D., President & CEO, QPR Institute
Problem
- Studies show more text messages are sent than phone calls made
- Suicidal people are texting their desire, intent and plans to die to others
- Of our highest risk group, 90% of men use the internet to find health information
- Only via web-based communications can confidentiality be fully protected
- Online intervention and counseling have proved to be safe and effective
Solution
According to Dr. Keith Harris of James Cook University, Singapore, the problem of "suicide surfers" is global. Currently, multiple authors in the new Nova Science book, Internet and Suicide, conclude that the Internet serves as a major information resource for suicidal people. Again, Dr. Harris, "Better online support services for suicidal people are more important than shutting down websites showing ways to die."
Now that electronic channels of communication like live chat, texting and SMS are being used ubiquitously in our society, progressive service providers are realizing they need to go beyond phone-based support and guidance via these online channels. In fact, in 2009 more than 1.5 trillion text messages were sent in the United States alone. QPR and iCarol are pleased to announce the general availability of the tools and training you may need to connect with people in these non-voice channels.
About QPR's new Online Suicide Intervention Specialist training
Called an Online Suicide Intervention Specialist (or OSIS), the Institute collaborated with several national and international organizations to build and beta test this new online training program to meet expressed educational and training needs. Those who earn a Certificate of Course Completion complete a rigorous, 40 hour knowledge competency-based, interactive, multi-media online training program and must successfully pass more than 130 test questions and practice challenges. The training program teaches the core competencies recommended by the American Association of Suicidology and the National Suicide Prevention Helpline. While some learners will be independent practitioners, most will be part of an organization currently providing crisis response via help lines and counseling services.
A phase two OSIS Certificate of Competency will be available in the fall of 2010. This certificate is available to those who complete the first course. Learners must demonstrate all the skill competencies taught to meet expert-determined external criteria and standards.
To learn more about the training goals and objectives click here <http://www.qprinstitute.com/Joomla> . A free tour of the course is available, as is Module 1 of the 10 module program.
Research
If you are interested in the research, challenges and opportunities of delivering suicide prevention, e-mental health and behavioral health services online, or in collaborating with the Institute in researching this new program and its impacts, please email me personally at pquinnett at mindspring.com <mailto:pquinnett at mindspring.com> .
Working in cyberspace
To achieve the suicide risk mitigation goals of this training program, sophisticated and secure texting, IM, e-mail and other channels of web-based communications must be available and assured for "suicide surfers." To complete this mission, the Institute is collaborating with iCarol in a joint effort to help prevent suicide by blending quality training with sophisticated communications software.
About iCarol Messaging
iCarol Messaging is more than just a hosted live chat service - it provides your online counselors with the same critical tools they need when they are talking to someone on the phone. With it, they can easily look up past chat "conversations", use suicidal risk assessment tools, provide referrals to service providers to the inquirer, seek immediate help from a support worker and log the conversation into a system that is geared for easy management, searching and reporting. This approach means that you don't have to procure, install and maintain yet another system to deploy live chat. Instead, deployment takes just minutes since iCarol is managing all the technical details for you and it is elegantly integrated with the rest of iCarol's robust non-profit help line features. To learn more about iCarol Messaging, please go to www.iCarol.com/messaging <http://www.icarol.com/messaging> . We at the QPR Institute strongly encourage you to watch the video.
QPR and iCarol working together
By combining quality training from the QPR Institute with iCarol Messaging a complete agency solution is now available. QPR has designed, tested and delivered online suicide prevention educational courses for college credit and continuing education for many years. The new OSIS course will qualify and certify volunteers, students and professionals to provide online emotional support, crisis intervention and behavioral health services in a text-only environment. At the same time, iCarol has perfected the integration of voice with non-voice channels of communication.
Background on the organizations
iCarol is the leading provider of non-profit help line software systems. Over 14,000 people around the world now use iCarol to help them run agencies that provide listening, emotional support, information, referral, advocacy, and suicide and violence prevention. Our clients rave about its ease of use, features and responsive support. You can learn more about iCarol at www.iCarol.com.
Through its more than 4,000 Certified QPR Instructors, the QPR Institute provides training and education in suicide prevention to more than 10,000 people per month, both in the US and abroad. By establishing and evaluating online training, coupled with built-in research protocols, the Institute now enters cyberspace where we believe even more at-risk persons can be reached.
Please email me directly with any questions for the QPR Institute.

Hello Dr. Quinnett,
Don't know if you remember me (we met briefly last spring in Denver) but you were most helpful in connecting me with unpublished studies (and Brown, Wyman et al.) when we collected data 3 years ago for a school-based study (should be published soon in SLTB). I wanted to alert you that the college-based QPR study we conducted here in Oregon just came out in JPP. I assumed you would see it at some point but thought I'd pass it along.
Thanks again for all of your help and for developing such a useful strategy for our ongoing suicide prevention work.
All my Best,
Tanya
