Thank you so much Kris and Emily! I was hoping you might still be around, and am so glad! I agree with you that he needs all the details regarding what’s happened, how it worked/didn’t work, why it’s needed, etc. Your backgrounds, resources and leads are very helpful, and I’ll be sure to pass this along to him right away.

And I’m still hoping to hear from others, too.

It’s so nice to reconnect, however briefly. I hope you both are doing well! It would be great to reunite via a conference/virtual conference sometime soon!

I'm also still lurking.

Sue Barb was the part-time Coordinator for California's AskNow service until the State Library cut funding for her position in 2006. She now manages QuestionPoint's's 24/7 service and she can be reached at barbs at oclc.org<mailto:barbs at oclc.org>. She may be able to connect PatJohn with librarians currently working in California who have an interest in bringing the service back.

Hello all. Still lurking on this list. :-)

I would encourage this individual to read up on the history of VR in California prior to starting any conversations. I don't have all or the exact citations at my fingertips, but California did have a statewide cooperative, I believe run by the State Library, which later disbanded. There was also the Q&A Cafe that was a multi-library type cooperative and which was started in the San Jose area, and of course, the MCLS Cooperative in the L.A. area started by Susan McGlamery which eventually moved over to OCLC.

I wrote about the history of many of the cooperatives in a book chapter in 2015:

  * Johnson, K., (2014) Collaborative Virtual Reference: Past, Present, and Future Trends. Reimagining Reference in the 21st Century. Purdue University Press
I say this all not to discourage the individual from trying, but so that this person goes into the conversations in California with full knowledge of the history of what has already been done.

I hope you are all doing well!

Best,

*Kris Johnson

Hello wonderful VR group,

I just want to run this by you: PatJohn Ashkin and I had a conversation this morning and I thought it might be helpful for him if he could attend our next VR meeting, to meet with us and learn more about what goes on behind the scenes.

PatJohn recently moved to California. He was previously working for Florida’s Ask a Librarian service. There, he found that he really has a passion for virtual reference service and would like to explore the possibility of starting a statewide service in California. Needless to say, this is a huge undertaking. Each of you have so much to offer someone like PatJohn, with your experience and advice, as he learns about the pros/cons, how to submit a proposal for state funding/support, etc.

What do you think about having him join us at the next meeting? Would it be acceptable to have him ask the group questions in that format?

It’s fun to think that this has come full circle. Susan McGlamery, the founder of the 24/7 Cooperative, started in California I believe. I was thinking that it would be helpful for him to talk to her about the history but I am out of touch with her. Does anyone have her contact info?
