[gis_info] cheap routing software?

Hi Heather,

As mentioned, PG Routing is one good OSS option. There are two other
routing engines worth noting, especially due to their compatibility with
transit data. GraphServer: http://graphserver.sourceforge.net/ & Five
Points: http://www.fpdev.org/. Both can (or soon will) read GTFS (Google
Transit Feed Spec) data directly.

Good luck,
Frank

I work in Vancouver, WA for a public transportation company. Our operations
department just called me wanting to know if I knew of a good cheap routing
software. They want it for quick demos of possible reroutes.

They have software called INIT which actually monitors the current GPS
location of every bus in our fleet and knows if it is on time or not.
However, there are sometimes we have to do a detour, like for a parade or
sewer project, and so they need to be able to put in new way points and have
it find distance and how long it should take based on speed limits. This
software doesn't do that.

I tried to demo GoogleMaps for them, and ititally, the test went pretty
well. It's easy to use, and it's free. But then they had me do a reroute in
downtown Portland for our express buses, and Google refused to do what we
wanted. It kept defaulting back to Broadway (arterial street), and we really
wanted to run though the bus mall on 5th.

So, what they are looking for is something to load on a laptop and be able
to do on the fly during a meeting.

Thank you,
Heather Kandoll

PGRouting is an open source solution that many web developers use. It
runs within PostGIS, which is an extension to Postgresql, an extremely
stable and widely used "enterprise class", opensource,
object-relational DBMS.

As a geologist, I have not had the need to do any routing :-)

However, I hear *really good things* about PGRouting!
Cheers,
Percy

Yes I was just typing the same thing as Percy did already reply.

Definitely check that one out. You can find information about
PostGIS from Refractions, Victoria, Canada here:
http://postgis.refractions.net/
and PgRouting from Orkney, Japan here: http://pgrouting.postlbs.org/

Also there is a great demo of "real time routing" - as you drag your cursor
using OpenLayers (http://openlayers.org/) + PgRouting - its amazing.
this demo at http://boston.freemap.in/routing.html
and video (http://crschmidt.net/blog/categories/pgrouting/ )

Lately, the demo sometimes didn't work for me in some browsers - not sure
what changed - but be assured technically real time routing over the web
(and on the desktop liekwize) with these tools can be made to work - I have
seen it.

Cheers
