Well based of what you have said it sounds like your “Deep Freeze” is conflicting with ArcMap.
Deep Freeze is designed to protect the core OS and config files, and runs as a kernal-level driver that protects hard drive integrity by redirecting information being written to the hard drive, leaving the original data intact. Also, every time you restart your PC Deep Freeze restores the hard drive to original state, so all your temp files, and config files that were made off the first launch of ArcMap, are gone, and it has to basically do First Launch every time or everyday.

I would have your System/Network Administrator make an exception on Deep Freeze and Novell for ESRI Products, which also includes Python, and VB.

Also ESRI users need to be Admins. to have full control of ArcMap because of what the program does and uses, especially if you are using it at INFO level. If that is not possible, try doing a custom launch shortcut so that just the ESRI Products “Run as Administrator”.

These programs are huge, and use a lot of resources, and go to kernel-level to run and do tasks, as well as use other programs to run.

You might want to consider putting the GIS Computers and its server on its own Network group/subnet, or try to have them be pretty much a direct line to the server, preferably on Giga-bit. It would make it easier to manage, and keep their Network traffic off the main network and opening up the bandwidth them to use.

hope some of this helps,

Jayson

Good Morning

I am seeking information that can help debug a major issue in the Lane CC GIS Lab. We are having serious difficulty running ArcMap (Info). The program take about 8 to 10 minutes to load and often freezes when it loads. Sometime it take 2 to 3 minutes to move a text box in layout view, and it will often spontaneously close. These are just a few of the problems we are having.

We are running 10 with service patch 2 on Windows 7.

We also have ENVI 7, Adobe CS5, Office 7, DNR Garmin, Multispec installed.

The lab computers are imaged and ?frozen? with Deep Freeze.

Our networks is administered with Novell.

The computers are two-year old Dell OptiPlex. We have two of these computers off campus and without Deep Freeze and Novell running ArcMap 10. They are not having issues.

I have talked with ESRI support and they are not able to offer any solutions.

Any help or ideas would be very appreciated.

Respectfully,
