*ArcGIS Development Using Python: Tools, Add-ins and the ArcGIS API*



*Course Description*

The goal of this workshop is to teach attendees how to extend the Esri
ArcGIS platform by using Python to create functionality that can run as
standalone programs or operate inside the software as geoprocessing tools
or add-ins and serve to support a wide variety of GIS needs, such as
analysis, visualization and administration.



Four primary topics will be addressed: (1) Basic Python and the use of
JetBrains
PyCharm <https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/> for program development; (2)
ArcGIS for Desktop and ArcGIS Pro script tools, Python toolboxes and
standalone scripts; (3) ArcGIS for Desktop add-ins; and (4) the ArcGIS API
for Python, a relatively recent product that is designed for use with
ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise and which, using Esri’s wording, “is a
powerful, modern and easy to use Pythonic library to perform GIS
visualization and analysis, spatial data management and GIS system
administration tasks.”



The workshop will consist of a balance between lectures and hands-on
exercises. Those who would like to complete the exercises during the
workshop will need to bring a laptop with ArcGIS for Desktop 10.4.1 (or a
newer version) and JetBrains PyCharm (Community Edition)

Attendees will be able to leave the workshop having a strong basis for
recognizing and pursuing their ArcGIS customization needs, increasing the
value of their ArcGIS investment and enhancing their standing and
employability as GIS professionals.

GIS professionals familiar with the ArcGIS desktop and online products.

·         Extend the capabilities of the ArcGIS platform using Python

·         Explore the relative merits and applicability of the Python
extensibility options

·         Create Python standalone programs, geoprocessing tools and add-ins



The workshop is part of an ongoing series under the GISPD.com

*David Howes, Ph.D.*

David Howes is a geospatial information scientist and the sole owner at
David Howes, LLC (dhowes.com) in Seattle, WA, specializing in the
development of GIS tools, processes and supporting infrastructure for a
variety of clients from small operations to multinational corporations.
With 26 years of academic and private sector experience in both the United
Kingdom and the United States in geography, Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) and fluvial geomorphology (including a Ph.D. in geomorphology from
the State University of New York at Buffalo and an M.Sc. in GIS from the
University of Edinburgh, Scotland), David has a diverse background that is
well-suited to developing innovative solutions to spatial problems. He is a
regular supporter of GIS professional development activities and, with Jeff
Berry of FocusGEO, LLC and Jason Pardy of Jason Pardy Consulting, provides
resources and conducts activities, including training, through GISPD.com

*Jeff Berry*

Jeff Berry is a GIS developer and owner of FocusGEO, LLC, a GIS services
company. Jeff has over 21 years’ experience implementing GIS solutions and
developing GIS applications for both public and private sector clients. He
has extensive experience in GIS database design and development, GIS
strategic planning and implementation, enterprise GIS deployment with the
Esri platform, GIS workflow automation with .NET and Python, and GIS
application development for desktop, web, and mobile platforms.  After 16
years as a GIS project manager and developer for an engineering and GIS
services firm, Jeff started his own company providing GIS services, along
with mapping services using drones and mobile lidar. Jeff is a regular
contributor to GISPD events, providing training and presentations in
partnership with David Howes.
