Well, isn't this exciting?
:-)
The new formal publication of the USGS' Geologic Database standard is now
approved, and we're having a meeting next week to introduce Oregon's
version of it!
FYI: Oregon's new geologic database standard is using this new standard...

Good morning -

Ralph Haugerud and I are pleased to announce that the GeMS documentation is
now published, as a USGS Techniques&Methods chapter (
https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/tm11B10). Regarding whom we thank for
contribution to this work, there are too many State Geological Survey and
USGS colleagues to list here, so we refer you to p. 1 of the document. In
addition, we thank Taryn Lindquist (USGS) for her superb technical editing
of the document (which wouldn't have been possible without her full grasp
of the concepts and attention to detail), and Cory Hurd (USGS) for the
layout, which was extremely challenging.

Regarding how our geologic community can increase efficiencies in
implementing GeMS, and how the published files will then be reposited in
the National Geologic Map Database, several of our USGS colleagues are
working with us to develop the validation tools and propose the criteria
for GeMS compliance. The tools are now being tested by the NGMDB Technical
Advisory Working Group (composed of members from twelve State Geological
Surveys), prior to release for general use. In the coming week, the
GeMS-compliance criteria will be debated within that Group, and I'll update
you, and request your comments, just as soon as possible.

Please note that our colleague Evan Thoms (USGS) is now managing content of
the GeMS website and GitHub. Evan co-wrote the original schema
("NCGMP09"), and now plays a lead role in the writing of GeMS code, and
coordination.

In closing, please enjoy a little light reading, provided by the GeMS
document. And please contact us at gems at usgs.gov with questions or
comments, at any time.

Happy Friday, a day early!

Dave
