Research Associate - National School Nutrition Policy Project
1.0 FTE - Short-term Project (mid- August 2011 - December 2011)
Position Description:
Upstream Public Health seeks a highly-qualified, full-time, short term
research associate for a rapid, complex research project. Upstream
Public Health seeks to understand how state-level policy changes to
school competitive foods affect social health determinants focused on
children*s health outcomes, school district revenue, and inequities.
This analysis is part of a Health Impact Assessment led by Upstream
Public Health in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts. Upstream is
a 501(c)3 non-profit public health advocacy group based in Portland,
Oregon that works to identify the most innovative, broad-based public
health solutions that are backed by science and research. For more

Projected Timeline:
The timeline for this research project is compressed and will begin in
mid-August with the report complete by the end of December of 2011.
Salary: $3,000- $4500 monthly salary without health benefits for a
5-month duration. Hours: Full-time from late August 2011to December
2011
Research Responsibilities:
The Research Associate, as a key member of a research team, will be
responsible for 1) working with a statistician to conduct an analysis of
the health and financial impacts of state-wide legislation based on
expert guidelines on HIAs and input from an advisory committee; 2)
contributing to a literature review on health and financial impacts of
competitive food legislation; 3) developing a set of case study
information; 4) synthesizing and authoring the HIA analysis into a final
report; and 5) co-developing policy recommendations. The researcher will
contribute to refining the methodology, research questions and structure
of the project.
Qualifications:
A strong candidate will have a graduate degree in Public Health,
Epidemiology, Health Policy or a related discipline, with two to three
years of research experience employing inferential statistics; PhD or
epidemiologist preferred. A helpful content background includes child
nutrition, food policy, or competitive foods with experience conducting
interviews or case study research.
Skills and Qualities: Experience with a statistic package, Microsoft
Office, and working on collaborative electronic documents required.
Prospective researchers must demonstrate an ability to execute and
complete a collaborative team research project with tight deadlines. We
are looking for a team player with active listening skills that can work
respectfully on a complex project with tight deadlines - and have fun
with it.We value communication; organization; excellent analysis,
writing and editing skills; critical thinking; initiative; and the
ability to process information quickly.
