Good morning, all -

I wanted to share a selection of the local earned media pieces from the tobacco retail assessment results, which we released on July 10. In addition to these, there have been several statewide pieces.

  * Columbia County - great work with the tailoring the press release with your local results! Holy smokes: Assessing Oregon's tobacco retail environment, statewide and locally. Chief News: https://www.thechiefnews.com/news_paid/holy-smokes-assessing-oregon-s-tobacco-retail-environment-statewide-and/article_5e53964c-a9b3-11e9-9c4a-bbcfdebd6d6b.html<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.thechiefnews.com_news-5Fpaid_holy-2Dsmokes-2Dassessing-2Doregon-2Ds-2Dtobacco-2Dretail-2Denvironment-2Dstatewide-2Dand_article-5F5e53964c-2Da9b3-2D11e9-2D9c4a-2Dbbcfdebd6d6b.html&d=DwMGaQ&c=7gilq_oJKU2hnacFUWFTuYqjMQ111TRstgx6WoATdXo&r=aRHD2Fsr73m-Hp16heDlLCC8xpUQeMNkUS3T5pGYgFo&m=U6Kx5h2z-PMpvuiRILDAPKX_Lv0PrTZSnwZEiJo3d3s&s=92S9DgYeyOpN2EjtQFILQDYouaF_G3lD6bhF1q_2g3c&e=>

  * Jefferson, Crook, and Deschutes Counties - we were glad to see the results complement tobacco retail license presentations happening in your counties. As the Deschutes piece below shows, earned media plus those presentations can result in some good coverage. Deschutes County may license tobacco retailers. * Douglas County will be featured later this week on Jefferson Exchange with Dr. Bob Dannenhoffer, County Health Officer, as a spokesperson.

  * The Skanner, a Portland metro area publication from the Black community that has an equity focus, picked up the press release as well. Tobacco in Oregon: Cheap, sweet, plentiful and sold at kids' eye level. The Skanner: https://www.theskanner.com/news/northwest/28792-tobacco-in-oregon-cheap-sweet-plentiful-and-sold-at-kids-eye-level<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.theskanner.com_news_northwest_28792-2Dtobacco-2Din-2Doregon-2Dcheap-2Dsweet-2Dplentiful-2Dand-2Dsold-2Dat-2Dkids-2Deye-2Dlevel&d=DwMF-g&c=7gilq_oJKU2hnacFUWFTuYqjMQ111TRstgx6WoATdXo&r=aRHD2Fsr73m-Hp16heDlLCC8xpUQeMNkUS3T5pGYgFo&m=lCrmfj2zwmKt-wEKfCpe7JWaw_1Pz3LOS9wQjVS830E&s=EXliBBAS0u5ttZYUvYs68ECpbRKB_hVnxc4IO4ymgbg&e=>

The initial coverage shows three things:

(1) The media finds this story interesting. (This means there will likely be interest in the alcohol report, too.)

(2) They're using our main talking points from the press release.

(3) The stories are better with local spokespeople -the Columbia County piece accurately reflects state and county tobacco prevention work, while the Deschutes County piece has some inaccuracies about state policy.

We're still available to help you leverage the report for earned media - there's clearly lots of interest. Feel free to reach out to me or Elizabeth Hartig (elizabeth.j.hartig at state.or.us<mailto:elizabeth.j.hartig at state.or.us>) if you'd like to talk about a local event or tailoring the toolkit<https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/DISEASESCONDITIONS/CHRONICDISEASE/HPCDPConnection/Tobacco/Pages/TobaccoMedia.aspx> to your needs.

All the best,
Sarah W.
