Have you been mesmerized by someone telling a story? Have you wanted people in your community talking and listening across differences? Have you wanted to use storytelling as a way to increase your organization's outreach? Have you wanted to use maps or National Register nominations for storytelling?

If you answered "yes" to any one of those questions, there are speakers, panels and discussions at the Oregon Heritage Conference for you. The conference will take place April 22-24 in North Bend-Coos Bay. Visit the conference website<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/Conference.aspx> now to register for the conference and learn about special lodging rates.

Here are some of the storytelling highlights.

n Keynote speaker Joaquin Lopez will talk about "The Power of Story: A Symbolic History" with a multi-faceted cultural presentation that weaves personal narrative, lecture and folk music.

n Adam Davis, the executive director of Oregon Humanities, will lead a two-part participatory session that models and provides an overview of how to explore and deepen attachment to heritage issues by getting people talking and listening across differences.

n An independent filmmaker and representatives of the Oregon Black Pioneers, the Coos History Museum and the Southern Oregon Historical Society will talk about ways they have learned to present diverse community perspectives.

n A preservationist and a cartographer will share how magic is created when GIS experts take old maps and historic information and spin them into interesting and exciting interactive displays.

n A communications professional will provide strategies for telling stories that inspire people to take actions such as donating or volunteering.

The Heritage Conference has more than three dozen sessions, many of them related to the theme of "Chart Your Course." Designed to be interdisciplinary, the conference focuses on all sectors of heritage, such as historic preservation, museums, archives, libraries, and local and state government. This year's conference, which is organized by Oregon Heritage, is co-sponsored by the Coquille Indian Tribe. Register now!<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/Conference.aspx>
