Re-Building South Portland
<http://visitahc.org/files/images/RebuildingSouthPortlandSmall.jpg> South
Portland is one of Portland's "lost neighborhoods" and an important part of
the city's historical memory. The neighborhood's size and proximity to
downtown made it the most visible immigrant district in the city from the
late 19th century until the 1950s.
South Portland was substantially erased at a single historical moment by
highway construction and Portland first Urban Renewal Program. The remnants
of South Portland-the area now known as the Lair Hill and Corbett
Neighborhoods-have much to tell us about the process that remade the
socially conservative Portland of the 1950s into the progressive city it is
today. They played a vital role in forming Portland's system of neighborhood
associations and were the first to experience the wave of gentrification
that has since affected much of the city.
Please join us at the AHC on Friday, October 8th at 6:00 PM for the opening
reception of this exhibit in our Meyer Memorial Gallery. The reception will
be followed by a brief lecture on South Portland by Dr. Carl Abbott, a
professor at Portland State University. Abbott has written extensively about
the growth and character of Portland.
