Hi Jude,

>From the perspective of the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries, these graves should be left in place. It is possible to move them.

This burial qualifies as an archaeological site, the owner would need to contact Dennis Griffin, State Archaeologist,Dennis.Griffin at state.or.us or 503-986-0674.

Also, he will need to contact the Oregon Mortuary and Cemetery Board to learn the appropriate paperwork and processes for moving a grave. www.oregon.gov/MortCem or Phone: 971-673-1500

Take care, Kur

HI
We have a man with what appears to be a grave on his land.
There are no next of kin.
Tombstone says 1912, we have searched for family. The land owner is trying to sell the city lot and wants the body moved.
Can someone tell me how to help him?

Thank you for your support,
Jude Graham

The newest Heritage Bulletin features vandalism in historic cemeteries. Following several recent events in Oregon, the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries has compiled lessons learned in the aftermath. It is a practical guide full of tips to avoid vandalism, be prepared for it and to get the best results following it.
