In preparation for Oregon Reads 2009, Talking Book and Braille Services is gearing up to have all three featured books (Stubborn Twig, Bat6, and Apples to Oregon) accessible in Braille and audio cassette.

Because Apples to Oregon is a children's book, the Braille version is imprinted in a format called "twin-vision" or "print-Braille." This means that the Braille copy of the book looks just like the regular picture book, but has the Braille imprinted over each page on clear plastic pages. This allows you to use the book during storytime just as you normally would, but also provides an opportunity for the children to see and feel Braille and to have a conversation about another unique Oregon experience, that of visually impaired children.

The twin-vision version of Apples to Oregon is maintained by Pheasantland Industries' Braille Unit in South Dakota. Pheasantland will create copies on-demand for about $5 each, with a $15 minumum purchase. If your library is interested in purchasing your own copy of Apples to Oregon for use during storytimes, you can contact Pheasantland directly at:

Pat Gacke
1600 North Drive, PO Box 5911
Sioux Falls, SD 57117
605-367-5084

Talking Book and Braille Services will purchase twin-vision copies of Apples to Oregon for loan to our registered talking book patrons. We are also willing to purchase extra copies for loan to public libraries through the State Library. If you think your library would be unable to purchase it's own copies of Apples to Oregon, please send an email to Elke Bruton at elke.bruton at state.or.us to express your interest in borrowing the title. This will give TBABS an idea of how many circulating copies to purchase for the State Library.

After the circulating copies of Apples are available, you will only need to ILL the book from the State Library.
