2016 Evelyn Sibley Lampman Award Recipient
Sybilla Cook
Writer, Educator, and School Librarian
Sybilla A. Cook started her career in the 1960's as a library volunteer. She found her career path and went on to earn a Master's in Library Science. Sybilla is a former school librarian. She worked at schools in Illinois and Glide, Oregon for over 22 years. Sybilla spent her career encouraging children to read through programs such as battle of the books and end of the school year buck a book programs. 
Sybilla also worked as a library consultant for Oregon districts, served on many school library committees in Oregon, and was involved across the state wherever her skills could be utilized. Her previous awards include the 1984 Library Teacher of the Year for Oregon, the Gandalf Award in Douglas County, and the 2008 Literacy Leader for Umpqua Reading Council. 
Sybilla Cook has written three books with BOB librarians from Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and Illinois:  "Books, Battles, and Bees: A Reader's Competition Resource for Intermediate Grades, "Elementary Battle of the Books", and  "Battle of the Book and More " are guides for school librarians who put together OBOB curriculum for children. Her impact on children in Oregon and the teachers and librarians who assist them can be seen through her many different areas of focus. She has written 6 books, as well as having taught classes on library science to graduate students through Western Oregon University. She has inspired library media specialists throughout Oregon on how to provide programs and services to the students they serve. 
Her program for battle of the books in Southern Oregon was a model for what is now the statewide OBOB program. 
The Evelyn Sibley Lampman Committee of 2015-2016 is pleased to choose Sybilla A. Cook as this year's Evelyn Sibley Lampman award winner.
