[kids-lib] Diverse BookFinder - next steps? (Jennifer Fischer)

Diverse Book Finder’s (DBF) Collection Assessment Tool (CAT) offers one
helpful lens for scanning a picture book collection. I ran a report in
October and found the information interesting, yet not surprising. Since
then we have had the opportunity to focus on aggressively
weeding our collection as we add more diverse options to our shelves. I am
looking forward to running another report for comparison.
One thing to consider is that CAT limits its assessment to matching books
in your collection against the database of Diverse Book Finder's own
collection. A DBF book must have a BIPOC character to be included. DBF
books are then tagged to indicate forms of diversity beyond race and
culture, such as ethnicities, genders, religions, abilities, and
sexualities. Your library’s picture books with diverse perspectives and
information that are outside the scope of DVT’s focus (e.g. "I Talk Like a
River" by Jordan Scott), will not be assigned as diverse in your report.
Because of how specifically CAT tags diversity, we use the tool with
discretion, and recognize a broader interpretation of diversity as we audit
our collection.
