Here is some information on two unrelated topics.

Teaching about the Russia-Ukraine War
Today staff from the Oregon Department of Education posted a bulletin<https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/ORED/bulletins/30c93a8> with resources for teaching about the situation in Ukraine. "Last week, tensions along the Ukraine-Russia border erupted into war. While traditional news sources are on the scene covering the crisis, this war is also being broadcast by Ukrainians and Russians on social media sites like TikTok<https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/feb/26/social-media-influencers-russia-ukraine-tiktok-instagram?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery>. The resources ... are intended to help students with some basic facts about the situation and some reminders on being critical consumers of information. It is also important to remember that images of war can create stress and trauma. Many Oregon families have connections to Ukraine, Russia, and the surrounding nations and may have strong feelings and responses to the current situation. Also included ... are SEL and trauma-informed resources to help create a positive learning environment..." Please share as you see fit, possibly including counselors and social sciences teachers at a minimum.

Highlighted Webinars for March & Early April
Tomorrow I'll post about the March webinar opportunities. In advance of that, I'd like to highlight three opportunities developed specifically for Oregon school library staff.

  *   Tuesday, March 15, 3:30 to 4:30 pm Pacific: Intellectual Freedom 101: Defending the Freedom to Read in School Libraries<https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_FA5PLQXDT2aV9aIYqBW9xA>

This webinar is aimed at anyone with no formal library training who works in a school library, although anyone interested in the topic is welcome to participate. Do you know what the term intellectual freedom<https://www.ala.org/advocacy/intfreedom/censorship/faq> means and how it applies to school library books, displays, and programs? Do you know basic best practices to consider when developing the school library collection? Do you know what to do if a book in your library gets challenged? If you answered no to one or more of these questions, we hope you'll join us for this presentation. We may extend the duration by 15 minutes to allow more time to cover each topic. The goal is to record the session. This is hosted by the State Library of Oregon and Region 2 of the Oregon Association of School Libraries.
