SCCTP Advanced Serials Cataloging

SCCTP Advanced Serials Cataloging (formerly CONSER Advanced Serials Cataloging) is a two-day workshop focusing on the original cataloging of printed serials, though the instructions are applicable to serials in any format.

It is based on the 2002 revision of Chapter 12 of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2), Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data and CONSER-specific policies and practices set forth in the CONSER Cataloging Manual and CONSER Editing Guide.

It addresses some of the more complex aspects of serials cataloging, including uniform titles, links and designations, as well as the cataloging of supplements, cumulations, reprints, microform reproductions and conference publications.

These workshops are offered in cooperation with the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP). Under the auspices of the Cooperative Online Serials Cataloging Program (CONSER), the SCCTP provies authoritative training materials and trained serials experts to enable broad-ranging education in the field of serials cataloging.

CONSER Standard Record

Shrinking budgets, and cataloging costs which don't, have forced library technical services departments to provide access to an increasing number of library resources with fewer available staff. Over a year's work by members of CONSER (the Cooperative Online Serials Program) has resulted in simplifying the process of serials cataloging. The CONSER "standard record" was developed to focus cataloging efforts on providing, for serials publications, those record elements necessary to help library users find, identify, select and obtain the resources they need and want.

New CONSER cataloging guidelines for creating a standard record were implemented on June 1, 2007. This workshop provides an overview of these new guidelines and practice in applying them.

Who Should Attend
The workshop is designed for catalogers who have experience with CONSER serials cataloging practice, or who have taken BCR's SCCTP Basic Serials Cataloging workshop.

Prerequisites: BCR's SCCTP Basic Serials Cataloging or CONSER serials cataloging practice.
