Library staff are being required to do more with less – but Firefox
can help!  Come to this training to learn
how easy customization of the Firefox web browser can improve your efficiency
and enhance the functionality of both staff and public computers.

Friday, March 5th, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.
PCC Cascade Library, Room 106
705 N. Killingsworth Street
Portland, OR 97217
For directions and parking information, see http://www.pcc.edu/about/locations/cascade/.

Workshop description:
This hands-on training will focus on these Firefox extensions:

·       Firefox
Accessibility Extensions -  a suite of plug-ins for
Firefox that provides robust accessibility options for patrons who need them.
This suite includes plug-ins that provide screen zooming, text-to-speech,
and adjust background/foreground color contrast. Having these tools
pre-installed on your public workstations will remove many barriers that some
patrons face when using public computers.

LibX:  -  LibX is a search and discovery tool that
scans pages for metadata as the browser loads them.  This tool gives libraries the ability to
put themselves front and center in the searching experience of their users
by integrating a Firefox toolbar onto their desktop.  The LibX plugin
can also assist subject selectors in the collection development process by
allowing them quick access to the online catalog in order to check
existing resources.  It can also, if using an open-URL resolver,
create hotlinks from ISBNs and ISSNs on many web pages that link directly
back to the local OPAC.  This workshop
will cover the basics on how to go about setting up your own LibX and
demonstrate how it is currently being used at Lewis & Clark.

     Zotero  The citation
manager Zotero is comparable to commercial products like RefWorks and
EndNote – but easier to use, and free.
Unlike subscription citation managers, students and
researchers can continue to use Zotero when they graduate or move to
another institution.  At this training, you can learn how to support
users wanting to use Zotero.  Learn also
how to use Zotero yourself to collect, organize and insert formatted
     citations into your papers.

·
A range of tools for enhancing how you use and experience the
Internet :

o    Add to Search Bar
Don’t go to the search engine, make it come to you! With one click you
can add search engines to your search bar. Enter search terms once and search
multiple databases in turn.

o     AutoPager: Are
you experiencing Next Page fatigue?  AutoPager-enabled sites let you scroll through
search results to your heart’s content.

o    KwiClick: Display
Google, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr and Google Maps results in a separate pane
that can be resized, moved, closed and re-opened.  Highlight terms or
addresses and quickly search Google and Google Maps without typing.

o    PermaTabs: Keep
tabs for your library catalog, databases page and other favorites always open.
No more accidently closed tabs.

o    And more!

Our panel of Firefox experts includes: Theresa Yancey (Reference Librarian,
Chemeketa Community College Library) who will discuss a variety of Firefox
plugins for personal and professional use; Nicholas Schiller (Systems &
Instruction librarian, WSU Vancouver Library) who will discuss accessibility
plugins for Firefox; Michael Bowman (Engineering Librarian, Portland State
University Library) who will discuss the Zotero citation management tool; and
James Bunnelle (Acquisitions/Collection Development Librarian, Lewis &
Clark College Library) who will discuss the LibX application.

The panel will also discuss technical and administrative challenges and
solutions involved in modding and extending software on both staff and
workstation computers, the comparative advantages of closed source and open
source software solutions, and other topics relating to web browsers and
extending software. Please come ready to contribute to a vibrant conversation
about the new possibilities and challenges raised by this emerging technology.
