State Library Board Will Not Meet in December

At the October 16, 2015 meeting of the Oregon State Library Board, it was decided that the next Board meeting will be in early January rather than in December as previously planned. Legislation which makes changes to the State Library Board, HB 3523, passed in the 2015 legislative session, and will take effect on January 1, 2016. The Board will adopt temporary administrative rules as directed in HB 3523. The meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 8, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Oregon State Library in Salem.

State Library Hosts Census Data Users Meeting

[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLODec2015/iCensus2020.jpg]OSL and the Oregon State Data Center co-hosted the annual Census Data users meeting last month. About 50 statisticians and policy analysts from a variety of state agencies attended the half-day workshop at the library, which was focused on poverty and economic data. Training also included a presentation on the planning process for the 2020 Decennial Census. Attendees learned that test runs for the 2020 Census will soon begin in Houston and Los Angeles and will explore the use of mobile apps by enumerators.

The presentations were filmed and are available for viewing from the PSU State Data Center site<http://www.pdx.edu/prc/node/62>.

Geology & Mineral Industries Digitizes Publications

[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLODec2015/DOGAMIsmall.jpg]The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) has been publishing a variety of reports since the agency's founding in 1937. From fossils to mining to earthquakes to geologic maps, the publications cover the breadth of Oregon's geology. Paper copies, and later, CD or DVD copies, were available at DOGAMI's main office and field offices, distributed to Oregon Documents Depository<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/GRES/Pages/OrDocs.aspx> libraries, and were also available for purchase from DOGAMI.

In 2001, the U.S. Bureau of Mines scanned all of DOGAMI's large-format maps, but not the accompanying text reports. DOGAMI scanned the reports. Once that was done, says Deb of Schueller of DOGAMI, "It was an easy decision to scan the rest of DOGAMI's publications." Staff scanned documents as time allowed, completing most by 2007.

Since 1992, DOGAMI publications had been sold through the Nature of the Northwest Center in Portland, but the center closed earlier this year. "It then became imperative to offer all DOGAMI publications free online" says Schueller.

You can browse the digital publications at DOGAMI's web site<http://www.oregongeology.org/sub/pub%26data/pub%26data.htm>. OSL is adding the digital copies to its large collection<https://ccrls.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/oslenterprise/search/results?qu=oregon+department+of+geology+and+mineral+industries&te=ILS&rt=false|||AUTHOR|||Author> of DOGAMI publications. Most are available for loan, including paper copies of maps through the 1990s.

The wealth of information in DOGAMI's publications is of benefit to all Oregonians.

Usability Testing Service Available from Gale/Cengage

[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLODec2015/UserExp.jpg]"Usability" is an increasingly important quality for library websites. On her Usable Libraries blog, Emily Singley<http://emilysingley.net/about/> recognizes the top 5 problems with library websites<http://emilysingley.net/top-5-problems-with-library-websites-a-review-of-recent-usability-studies/>. These problems were identified through usability testing. Do any of these snags sound familiar? Libraries that participate in the Statewide Database Licensing Program (SDLP) have access to Gale/Cengage Learning's usability testing service. Help is available to make your library website more usable and appealing to all in your community! Contact Nick Schultz (nick.schultz at cengage.com<mailto:nick.schultz at cengage.com>) for more information about the program and how to sign up!

OSLIS Information for Oregon Public Library Staff

[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLODec2015/OSLISlogo2014Small.jpg]<http://oslis.org/>OSLIS<http://oslis.org/>, or the Oregon School Library Information System, is a K-12 information literacy website and an access point to the statewide databases for Oregon students and educators. Those databases are the same ones you make available in your public library. For consistency, many public library staff show the database access point via OSLIS instead of via their own library's website when helping K-12 students. To learn more about OSLIS, read this two-page overview<https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8lnGdvYSfCGYVhhYlgyd0w3UzA/view>. You can download the document by clicking on the down arrow at the top of the page that opens. If you have questions or want the Gale database logins for the school districts and private schools your library serves, please contact Jennifer Maurer<mailto:jennifer.maurer at state.or.us>, School Library Consultant.

OSLIS Learn to Research Posters and Bookmarks Now Available

[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLODec2015/LearnToResearchPosterScreenshotSmall.png]A major purpose of OSLIS is to help students learn how to do research. The OSLIS Learn to Research model includes four steps for elementary<http://elementary.oslis.org/learn-to-research> students and six steps for secondary<http://secondary.oslis.org/learn-to-research>. The OSLIS committee<http://oslis.org/oslissupport/aboutoslis/osliscommittee> is continually updating content in the Learn to Research section, and they recently worked with a graphic artist to design posters and bookmarks that outline the research process. Three poster sizes are available for download. The link is at the bottom of the Learn to Research landing page for elementary educators<http://elementary.educator.oslis.org/learn-to-research> and secondary educators<http://secondary.educator.oslis.org/learn-to-research>. Those landing pages are also the access point for the master list of information literacy eBooks<http://oslis.org/oslissupport/announcements/2014/november-13-2014> that are embedded throughout the Learn to Research section. For more information about the eBook series, including the login, read this two-page OSLIS overview<https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8lnGdvYSfCGYVhhYlgyd0w3UzA/view>. Please share this information with homeschooling families and others when relevant. Questions? Contact Jennifer Maurer<mailto:jennifer.maurer at state.or.us>, School Library Consultant.

2015 Oregon Summer Reading Brief now available!

Oregon public libraries are critical community partners in addressing the summer learning slide where underserved youth lose reading skills while school is out for the summer. As many as 68,735 children and teens read enough during the summer to finish their local public library's summer reading program. Public libraries also made extra efforts to get underserved youth to participate in summer reading by translating materials into Spanish, presenting activities in Spanish, taking summer reading to free summer lunch sites, and reaching out to schools, daycares, and afterschool programs. Children and teens who participate in public library summer reading programs are more likely to maintain or improve their reading skills during summer vacation. Read the 2015 Oregon Summer Reading Brief<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/youthsvcs/srp.certificates/2015SRPBrief-fd.pdf> to learn more.

Oregon's 2016 LSTA Grant Cycle Opening in January

The 2016 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant cycle will be opening in January. For those who have submitted grants in the past, the State Library Board approved a new one step process. The new grant cycle will open in January with full grant proposals due on April 15, 2016, OSL Board approval will occur in June and approved grants will start on July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. To aid in the new process, grantees will have an opportunity to submit their draft proposals in March for review and comment by the LSTA Advisory Council and the Library Support and Development Division staff. So be thinking about those projects that will align and support the goals of the LSTA Five-Year plan<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/LSTA/lstaplanfinaljune27.pdf>. For more information, please contact Ann Reed<mailto:ann.reed at state.or.us> at 503-378-5027.
