Library Board News


State Library Board to Meet at Beaverton City Library on June 19th

The Oregon State Library Board will meet on Friday, June 19, 2015 at the Beaverton City Library in Beaverton. The Board will consider a recommendation from the Library Services and Technology Act Advisory Council for a database purchase and from the Talking Book and Braille Library Advisory Council about expenditure of donation funds in 2015-16. The Board will also discuss the implementation of House Bill 3523, the performance management process for the State Librarian, and the Board self-evaluation. The next board meeting will be held on Friday, August 21st at the Deschutes Public Library in Bend.

Oregon Student Wins National Honor Award in Letters About Literature Contest

[Hannah][LALLogo]Hannah DesChamp, a sophomore at North Eugene High School, was selected as a National Honor Award recipient for her 2015 Letters About Literature entry. Hannah wrote a powerful letter to Pablo Neruda about how she connected with his poem, "I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You." She will receive a $200 check from the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, and her letter will be featured on the national Letters About Literature website<http://www.read.gov/letters/>. Oregon's Letters About Literature honorees, including Hannah, were recognized at an awards celebration at the State Library last month, and their letters are posted on our website<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/aboutlit.aspx>. New Gale Middle School Database: Research In Context

[RIC]Gale released a new middle school product for students in grades 6-8. Research In Context brings together content from and replaces the following databases: InfoTrac Junior, Discovering Collection, Junior Reference Collection, and Student Resource Center Junior. (The latter is different from Student Resources In Context, which is not changing). Research In Context features a modern interface and tool set consistent with Gale's In Context products. Content is cross-disciplinary, focusing on core curriculum areas of literature, science, and U.S. and world history. New Members Elected to Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee

The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Advisory Council elected the following new members to serve on the Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/technology/sdlp/index.aspx#Advisory_Committee_&_Meeting_Minutes> (SDLAC) at their meeting on May 12, 2015.

* Position #4, Public Library Serving 25,000 to 100,000 - Robert Lanxon
* Position #5, Academic Library from an Oregon Community College - Amy Hofer
* Position #6, School Library drawn from OASL Membership - Miranda Doyle
* Position #10, Tribal Library Representative - Marion Mercier
* Position #7, Public Library Serving over 100,000 - Jennifer Pedersen

New members will begin their terms on July 1, 2015. The SDLAC also elected Diane Sotak to serve as Chair for the upcoming year, and Jonathan Cain will serve as liaison from the LSTA Advisory Council. The State Library would like to offer a big thank you to outgoing members: Liz Paulus, Stephen Cox, Glenna Rhodes, and Marika Pineda.

Library Support Portal for Gale Databases Updated

[GALELogo]The Oregon Statewide Databases Library Support Portal has been redesigned! Libraries can use the portal to find information and resources related to the Gale databases in Oregon's state contract. Use the portal to:

* Locate the URLs, Icons, MARC Records, and Widgets available for individual databases
* Access training and webinar materials
* Obtain marketing materials such as posters, table tents, bookmarks, and more

Public, tribal, and academic libraries can now use the same portal to access these resources. School library staff should continue to use OSLIS<http://oslis.org/> to access the Gale databases but can take advantage of other resources on this portal; contact Jen Maurer<mailto:jennifer.maurer at state.or.us> for further assistance. Katie Anderson Wins Lampman Award

[KatieAnderson]The Children's Services Division of the Oregon Library Association (OLA) selected Katie Anderson to receive the 2015 Evelyn Sibley Lampman Award. The award was established in 1982 to honor an Oregon author, librarian, or educator who has made a significant contribution to Oregon in the fields of children's literature and library services. This year's award was presented at the OLA Conference in Eugene in April 2015.

Katie has been the Youth Services Consultant at the Oregon State Library since 2006. MaryKay Dahlgreen summed up Katie's outstanding contributions as follows: "Katie is deeply committed to excellent library service for children and their caregivers and is an excellent spokesperson for that in all corners of our state." In the presentation of her award, her library colleagues' praised her knowledge and responsiveness, emphasizing that whenever a youth services question comes up, the first response is often "Just ask Katie!" Congratulations Katie!

New Members Appointed to Government Information and Library Services Advisory Council

At their April 15, 2105 meeting, the Oregon State Library Board of Trustees appointed Matt Ausec, Jeannette Hulse, and Donna McKeever to the Government Information and Library Services Advisory Council. Council members advise staff on strategies for better serving the information and reference needs of Oregon state government agencies. The Council also assists staff in creating effective strategies and programs to inform state employees about services and to train state employees in the use of these services. We are very excited to have Matt, Jeannette, and Donna as new members. Matt works as an Implementation Team Lead with the Oregon Health Authority, Jeannette is an Operations and Policy Analyst with the Department of Human Services, and Donna works as a Crash Data Technician for the Department of Transportation.

Student Worker Kate Anderson Leaves OSL

(Important note: Kate Anderson and Katie Anderson are two different people!)

[KateAnderson]Kate Anderson, student office worker for Government Information and Library Services at the Oregon State Library, graduates from Western Oregon University in June. Kate's dual degree is a BS in Gerontology and a minor in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology, along with a BS in Public Policy and Administration with a Health Policy Concentration.

Kate has worked at the State Library for nearly three years (July would have been her third anniversary). Her regular duties are shelving and assisting with projects in Technical Services. In addition to those duties, Kate did a number of special projects: correcting item locations in the online catalog, weeding, shifting, and inputting hundreds of brief catalog records for Oregon Vertical File folders. All of this work significantly enhanced access to OSL's collections.

Kate says her favorite task is shelving: "It is calming to me and I get to listen to music." Her least favorite is vacuuming in the stacks.

Besides being known for her excellent work, Kate is also legendary for the fabulous cupcakes she brings for special occasions. She says she particularly likes baking cupcakes with fillings: "It brings an extra level to the cupcake flavor in the end and it keeps me in the kitchen longer." But her all-time favorite is Key lime with graham-cracker crust.

Government Information and Library Services manager Margie Harrison says "Kate always seems to have a smile on her face. You'd think that five months of shifting over 2,000 shelves of materials in unusually warm stacks would dampen her spirits, but not Kate. With her upbeat and can-do attitude, she keeps us all smiling."

Staff member Robby Pietz, who has worked with Kate on several projects, says she is "...an outstanding, hard working and dedicated part of this agency; her presence will be greatly missed."

After graduation, Kate hopes to get a job with the Oregon Department of Justice. Her goals also include a law degree.

OSL staff thanks Kate for all her contributions to the State Library and wishes her the best in her future career.

State Library Purchases Statewide License for Edge Initiative

[Edge]The Oregon State Library is pleased to announce that all Oregon public and tribal libraries can participate in the Edge Initiative<http://www.libraryedge.org/about-edge> for free beginning July 1, 2015. The Edge Toolkit<http://www.libraryedge.org/toolkit> has been designed to assist public and tribal libraries in meeting their individual demands and challenges of providing technology and technology services in alignment with community priorities and to plan for future technology needs. The Edge Toolkit provides an online assessment (2-4 hours to complete), live webinars on topics directly related to improving your services, programs, and leadership skills, an online planning tool, and supplementary resources to assist libraries in implementing their plan. Additionally, Darci Hanning is available to lead kick-off meetings with library staff, facilitate planning sessions, and provide consulting services to help library staff succeed in meeting their Edge goals. Answerland Moves to State Library on July 1st

[Answerland]Answerland, Oregon's statewide virtual reference service, which lets anyone connect to a librarian by live chat, email or text messaging, will be transitioning from Multnomah County Library<https://multcolib.org/> to the Oregon State Library<http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/pages/index.aspx>. The Oregon State Library Board of Trustees met on December 5, 2014 and voted unanimously in support of moving the administration of Answerland from Multnomah County Library to the Oregon State Library. On July 1st, Answerland will officially move to the Oregon State Library. Activities around acquiring new software and a new permanent position at the State Library to coordinate the Answerland service are moving forward. The current Answerland software will remain in use through the end of September.

The transition team (made up of Darci Hanning, Technology Development Consultant for Library at Oregon State Library, Rachael Short, Answerland Coordinator at Multnomah County Library, and Emily Papagni, Answerland Support Librarian at Multnomah County Library) continues working on transition activities, guided by input from the Answerland Advisory Board<https://www.answerland.org/advisory-board>.

Please note that the State Library has no plans to charge libraries for participating in Answerland during the 2015-16 fiscal year.

Plan Now to get "Outside the Lines 2015" for September 13th - 19th

Outside the Lines is an initiative designed by Colorado library marketers and directors that gets libraries "walking the walk" - taking action to show our communities how important libraries are and how they've changed. To accomplish this, a weeklong celebration demonstrating the creativity and innovation happening in libraries has been established. Whether your organization is large or small, a school library or a public library, you can participate by hosting at least one event or campaign that:

* Gets people thinking - and talking - about libraries in a different way
* Showcases the library out in the community as well as in the library
* Highlights how your library is relevant to people's lives
* Represents your local community
* Is active versus passive - gets people engaged
* Is extraordinary and unexpected
* Most importantly, is fun!
