At this year's OLA conference<http://www.olaweb.org/ola-conference-2015> in Eugene, the Technical Services Round Table (TSRT) is sponsoring a preconference, New Developments in Genre/Form Access. Come join us for a full day of exploration into new approaches to expressing genre and form aspects of library resources in your cataloging!

Genre/form headings describe what an item is, rather than what it is about. The Library of Congress has been removing genre/form headings from LCSH and incorporating them into LC Genre/Form Terms (LCGFT) for several years, focusing on specific types of material such as moving images or maps. Recently, many "general" genre/form terms were added to LCGFT.

Big changes are ahead for music and literature this year, as genre terms are finalized and LC no longer assigns LCSH form headings in these areas. This preconference will explain what these changes will bring to cataloging: new MARC fields for aspects of LCSH headings that are not genre, and new LC vocabularies for medium of performance and demographic terms. We'll also take a look at new developments in the controlled vocabularies maintained by the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of ACRL. The implications of the changes for discovery systems will also be explored: how might these new MARC fields and vocabularies affect the way we search?

Speakers:
Adam Schiff, University of Washington; Ann Shaffer, University of Oregon; Ryan Hildebrand, University of Oregon; Lori Robare, University of Oregon.

The cost of the full-day preconference is $100 and includes lunch. The session runs from 9:00-4:00 on Wednesday, April 15.

Early Bird Registration for OLA ends Friday, March 13! Register<http://www.olaweb.org/ola-conference-2015---registration> now to get the best rate for the conference.
