Robin Speer Retires after Fourteen Years at the State Library

[RSpeer]On September 30, 2015, Robin Speer retired from the Oregon State Library. She has been with the State Library for 14 years, and in state service for a total of 29 years. Before joining the State Library staff, Robin worked at the Capitol in Visitor Services, in addition to supporting members of the Oregon Legislature. Robin continued her service to the State of Oregon at the State Library working in administration before becoming the volunteer coordinator for the agency and fund development coordinator for the Talking Book and Braille Library. She has made meaningful connections with many of our most dedicated volunteers. Robin has also supported the State Library Board and two different State Librarians throughout her time with the State Library. As one of her last projects, Robin made her idea of a Talking Books donor board a reality. We thank her sincerely for her years of service, sharing her creativity, upbeat attitude, innovation, and loyalty with the agency. We wish her the best in her retirement!

New Donor Board Unveiled

[DonorBoard]On October 16th, the Oregon Talking Book and Braille Library unveiled its new donor board to honor those who have made substantial donations to the Talking Book Library. Aletha Bonebrake, Chair of the State Library Board of Trustees, and MaryKay Dahlgreen, State Librarian, thanked both the donors being honored and the staff who worked to develop and expand the donation and endowment programs over the years. The donor board displays 30 names of people who have made donations of $10,000 or more. It is displayed above the front desk of the Talking Book and Braille Library at the State Library.

Thank You For Your Data

We will then be sending the data on to the Institute for Museum and Library Service.

Resources Available at the State of Oregon Law Library

[SupremeCourt]The State of Oregon Law Library<http://soll.libguides.com/home> (SOLL) is located on the second floor of the Supreme Court building in Salem, Oregon. SOLL is open to the public from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. Citizens of Oregon can sign up for a free library card and take full advantage of both the reference support and physical materials. SOLL also provides a wide range of support for patrons who are unable to come to the library, including an Ask a Law Librarian<http://soll.libguides.com/questions> service and online subject guides<http://soll.libanswers.com/browse.php>.

Recently, the State of Oregon Law Library also invested in two online legal resources that are available to all Oregonians: EBSCO's Legal Information Reference Service<https://stateoforegonlawlibrary.blogspot.com/2015/04/nolo-books-and-ebscos-legal-information.html> and Fastcase<https://stateoforegonlawlibrary.blogspot.com/2015/10/free-fastcase-access-for-all-oregonians.html>. If you need assistance with any of these resources you can contact the State of Oregon Law Library's reference librarian Lewis Zimmerman by phone (503-986-5640) or by email<mailto:state.law.library at ojd.state.or.us>.

EBSCO's Legal Information Reference Service<https://stateoforegonlawlibrary.blogspot.com/2015/04/nolo-books-and-ebscos-legal-information.html>

This database features materials from the legal publisher NOLO. NOLO books are legal reference books for non-lawyers which cover many common legal issues. The State of Oregon Law Library has put together a short guide<https://stateoforegonlawlibrary.blogspot.com/2015/04/nolo-books-and-ebscos-legal-information.html> to introduce this resource and provides login information.

Fastcase<https://stateoforegonlawlibrary.blogspot.com/2015/10/free-fastcase-access-for-all-oregonians.html>

Fastcase combines advanced search options with a wide range of law from the federal government, the state of Oregon, and other states in the federal 9th circuit. Fastcase is known for its ability to parse search results in a way that is similar to popular search engines, making it more intuitive than many other legal databases. It also features the Bad Law Bot, an automated service that attempts to identify when other courts have cited a case negatively. SOLL has put together a guide<https://stateoforegonlawlibrary.blogspot.com/2015/10/free-fastcase-access-for-all-oregonians.html> that describes this resource and provides login instructions.
