Library Board News


State Library Board to Meet at the Oregon State Library on October 16th

The Oregon State Library Board will meet on Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Oregon State Library in Salem. The Board will hear recommendations from the LSTA Advisory Council and the Talking Book and Braille Library Advisory Council. They will also hear information about the Talking Book and Braille Endowment, a 2015-2016 Ready to Read Grant Appeal, and an HB 3523 Progress Report. In addition, the Board will participate in an engagement activity and attend the dedication of our new Donor Board in the Talking Book and Braille Library. An open forum is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. The date of the next board meeting will be announced soon.

New Content Coming to LearningExpress Library in November

[LEL]On November 1, 2015, the Statewide Database Licensing Program's subscription to LearningExpress Library will offer two additional resources: Job & Career Accelerator<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/technology/sdlp/learningexpress/LEL3.0_JobCareerAccelerator_lowres.pdf> and Computer and Internet Basics<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/technology/sdlp/learningexpress/LEL3.0_Computerand%20InternetBasics_highres.pdf>. Job & Career Accelerator offers job seekers tools for career exploration, resume and cover letter building, and access to over 5 million job and internship postings. Computer and Internet Basics provides video tutorials on digital literacy concepts such as computer safety, Internet searching, and basic desktop navigation. Use your Library's Brand in the Gale Databases

A recent blog post<http://blog.gale.com/gale-technical-solutions-branding/> highlights the opportunities to use your library's brand within Gale databases. You can even use a splash page<http://galesupport.com/lamp/examples/chilton_branding.png> to promote your library before the user enters their search. Or, you can add the Answerland<https://www.answerland.org/> logo and link to offer your users an additional source of help when using the databases. Talking Book and Braille Library Honors Donors with New Display

[TB]The Oregon Talking Book and Braille Library is unveiling a new donor board to honor people who make large donations to the Talking Book Library. The event will be held on October 16th at 2:00 p.m. in the lobby of the State Library, 250 Winter Street NE, Salem, Oregon. The donor board will display 30 names of people who have made donations of $10,000 or more. The unveiling ceremony is open to the public.



Baker County Library Featured on National Edge Initiative Website

[Edge]"Keeping up with daily demands generally leaves little time for strategic planning or expansion of services, says Library Director Perry Stokes. However, Baker County Library District (BCLD) is finding it easier to apply their Edge assessment data, along with other recommendations and resources from the toolkit, to developing an action plan for improving library operations and expanding community services. [...] Through Edge, BCLD was able to prioritize strengths and weaknesses into a cohesive technology action plan comprised of immediate, short and long term goals. Edge enabled the Library to efficiently identify services adopted by peer libraries and match them to Baker County's needs with a level of focus it had never experienced before." Diversity and Inclusion + State Government = State Library Services

Diversity and inclusion are important components of workforce development. Diversity recognizes and [Poster] values individual differences and inclusion brings individuals together to become a more cohesive and productive workgroup. Oregon State Library is involved in supporting and promoting state diversity and inclusion initiatives to state government in a number of ways.

[Banner]The library maintains a collection of materials in this topical area. Check out our InfoGuide<http://libguides.osl.state.or.us/diversity> on Diversity and Inclusion Resources which was recently redesigned by our Web Services Librarian, Claire Bolyard.

In addition, the State Library is considered both a planning partner and a participant in the popular and expanding State of Oregon Diversity and Inclusion Conference. This conference has been held for over 20 years and continues to grow in size and program quality. This year there were approximately 1200 registrants. Governor Kate Brown provided opening remarks. Two State Library divisions, Government Information and Library Services and Talking Books and Braille Library, staffed exhibit tables offering state employees information about library resources, related services, and the opportunity to browse and checkout materials. Elke Bruton, Outreach Librarian for Talking Books and Braille Library, was invited for a second year to present her program: Reading in the Dark. This program introduces state employees to services offered by the library for print-impaired Oregon citizens and offers opportunities to discuss the benefit of such services and how agencies can make co-workers and clients alike aware of these services. Letters About Literature Entries Due in December & January

[LEL]Letters About Literature is a national reading and writing contest sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress (LOC), the Dollar General Literacy Foundation<http://www2.dollargeneral.com/dgliteracy/Pages/index.aspx> (new!), and in Oregon by Willamette Writers (new!). Students write letters to any author explaining how that author's book changed their way of thinking about the world or themselves. There are three competition levels: Level I for 4th-6th graders, Level II for 7th-8th graders, and Level III for 9th-12th graders. Oregon's three winners - one from each competition level - will go on to compete nationally. Entry forms and guidelines are available on the Willamette Writers<http://willamettewriters.com/letters-about-literature/> and the State Library<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/aboutlit.aspx>'s websites. All high school (Level III) entries must be postmarked by December 4, 2015 and elementary and middle school (Levels I and II) entries by January 11, 2016. Locally, prizes are made possible through support from the Oregon Reading Association and three divisions of the Oregon Library Association: Oregon Association of School Libraries, Children's Services Division, and Oregon Young Adult Network. 2015 Oregon Public Library Needs Assessment Released

[Needs]In January of 2015, The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) commissioned an Oregon Public Library Needs Assessment, funded by the Lora L. & Martin N. Kelley Family Foundation Trust and the Betsy Priddy Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation. Penny Hummel Consulting prepared the study, which was released on September 2, 2015 at a summit hosted by OCF with other Oregon funders. Hummel provided an overview of the needs assessment's findings which was enthusiastically received.
