Are you ready to learn more about protecting digital privacy for you and
your library patrons? The Intellectual Freedom Committee is pleased to
bring Alison Macrina of the Library Freedom Project
<https://libraryfreedomproject.org/> to you for an information-packed
preconference session and a concurrent session at the OLA Conference in
Bend. Register soon to secure your seat for Alison's preconference
session, *Digital Privacy Toolkit*, on Wednesday, April 20..

Alison has become one of the foremost advocates for digital privacy in the
library community. You may have heard about Alison as one of Library
Journal’s 2015 Shakers and Movers
<http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2015/03/people/movers-shakers-2015/alison-macrina-movers-shakers-2015-advocates/#_>
, in the The Nation’s article Librarians Versus the NSA
<http://www.thenation.com/article/librarians-versus-nsa/> , or in her
advocacy for Kilton Public Library in its battle with the Department of
Homeland Security

over its use of the Tor network.

Alison will lead the pre-conference session Digital Privacy Toolkit on April
20, 1 - 5 p.m. This training will provide technology tools to help subvert
digital spying from government agencies, corporate data miners, and
criminal hackers. These tools address issues including

   -

web tracking -- how search engines collect and store information typed
into them, and how sites use scripts and cookies to collect data about our
behavior on that site and follow us all over the web
   -

encryption -- ways to secure and obscure communication such as texts and
   chats
   -

password protection - making, using, and storing strong passwords with
   password managers
   -

   secure deletion of temporary files
   -

private browsing -- common threats from web browsers and how to have
better privacy with Tor Browser or privacy extensions,
   -

   online anonymity

There will be tools appropriate for people at all levels of technical
ability, and they can be installed on library computers or taught to
patrons in computer classes. Both public service and technology staff will
benefit from this training.
