Library Board News


State Library Board to Meet in Independence on October 28th

The Oregon State Library Board will meet on Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Independence Public Library in Independence. The board's new business includes acting on recommendations from the Library Services and Technology Act Advisory Council and Talking Book and Braille Library Advisory Council. They will also hear a report on the 2016-2017 Ready to Read grants and hear from Janet Webster of the Oregon Library Association Legislative Committee. Continuing business includes discussions about the State Librarian evaluation process and the board's roles and responsibilities. The open forum is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Anyone may address the board on any topic at the open forum.



Senate Approves Two New Members of the State Library Board

On September 21, 2016, the Senate Rules and Executive Appointments Committee confirmed our two recently appointed board members, Julie Curtis of the Oregon Department of State Lands and Lori Wamsley of Lane Community College Library. We welcome them both to the State Library Board.



State Librarian to Visit Fujian, China

[Fujian Provincial Library]During October, State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen is traveling to China as a guest of the Fujian Provincial Library, our sister library. She, Rosalind Wang (retired librarian), and Amy Lee (Ft. Vancouver Regional Library) will be joining the three librarians participating in the Horner Library Staff Exchange. Dahlgreen will be visiting several libraries and will be presenting at the annual conference of Fujian librarians. Dahlgreen, Wang, and Lee will stay for one week while Richard Sapon-White (OSU Libraries), Veronica Vichit-Vadakan (Oregon College of Oriental Medicine Library), and Jian Wang (PSU Library), the official Horner Exchange delegates, will be visiting libraries in Fujian for three weeks. Oregon Documents Summit Discusses Possible Changes

On September 14, 2016, staff from the State Library, state agencies, Oregon Documents Depository libraries, and other libraries met at the State Library to discuss the status and future of the Oregon Documents Depository Program<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/GRES/Pages/OrDocs.aspx>. The 24 participants analyzed strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, brainstormed ideas, and agreed on action items. The summit was ably facilitated by Katie Anderson.

Working with stakeholders, the State Library will take the lead on the following action items:

*Define Roles and Terminology
*Digitize All Oregon Documents

The State Library will also work on additional tasks, including increased public relations and outreach, clarifying requirements for state agencies, and investigating having depository libraries receive only digital content.

Small Business Resource Center is Getting a Makeover!

[Logo]A new interface will be introduced to the Small Business Resource Center on October 3, 2016. The interface will align with other Gale databases and offer similar tools, including integration with Google and Microsoft. Other enhancements include a glossary, more audio and video content, and suggested topics for small business owners and entrepreneurs. This is a great resource to promote in your local business community or with students looking for assistance with writing business plans. This resource is available to Oregon libraries through the Statewide Database Licensing Program<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/technology/sdlp/index.aspx>.
