Title:  Making Connections and Making Changes:  The Sister Libraries Program of ALA's International Relations Round Table

This webinar will discuss the details of ALA's Sister Libraries program.  Are you interested in partnering your library with a library in another country?  Find out some of the best methods for seeking a partner library, the steps in planning your partnership, and suggested activities.  Know what to expect so that you can more easily involve others at your library.  We will walk you through the partnering process and the resources on our website.  Plus, we will share highlights and recommendations from the evaluation of the Sister Libraries program, recently completed by a group of Emerging Leaders:  What's next for Sister Libraries?

Speakers:



Melissa West is a public librarian in southern Maine. She worked first worked with IRRT's Sister Libraries Committee as part of of her ALA Emerging Leaders project last year. She has been a Sister Libraries Committee member since 2017. She is also an active member of YALSA and her state library association. She is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Azerbaijan, 2009-2011).

Dr. Rebecca L. Miller is the founder and principal consultant of BiblioDev, LLC, a consulting firm with the mission of assisting libraries in developing countries, because better libraries lead to better lives. Dr. Miller is passionate about the development of libraries, archives and information centers to foster increasing literacy levels and a culture of reading and research in countries that need it most. She has spent nearly five years in Afghanistan, where she was the Library Director at the American University of Afghanistan for two years, and has worked on several consultancies and volunteer projects to educate Afghan librarians and improve the level of professional service. Prior to moving to Afghanistan, she was an Assistant Professor at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Kentucky, and Program Director at the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State University. Currently she resides in Munich, Germany, where her most recent projects have included developing a digital asset management system for a global corporation and conducting research on the information needs of refugees. Dr. Miller holds a MLS and PhD in Library Science from Emporia State University (Kansas, USA), and a MA in Diplomacy from the Patterson School, University of Kentucky (Kentucky, USA).

J. Angela (Angie) Wiehagen is a reference and instruction librarian at Shoreline Community College, near Seattle. She was nominated as a co-chair of the Sister Libraries Committee in 2013 after presenting on the Sister Libraries program at the Russian Library Association annual conference in Penza, Russia—where she had previously served as a Peace Corps Volunteer. She is looking forward to sharing new developments and streamlined processes in the Sister Libraries program as she prepares to step down as co-chair this summer.
